David Stereo Floorstanders... "I Broke The Plans"

#1 Post by chaywood »

I built a pair Davids.... but I did "break the plans". They were built "straight" instead of having the anti-diffraction MTM section as per the plans. I used the recommended GR-Research Mids and Tweeters, but laid out modified. They also have removable grills and are trimmed with walnut. The MTM section has a removable motor board and the woofer port is now located on the front.

They sound amazing and I am overly pleased !

The inspiration for the grills came from an online restorer of vintage speakers.... CH

They look great. How big are the David's? Do you have a pic of them with something else in for scale?
Built: Omni 15 TB | 2 x Omni 10.5's | 2 x Jack 210's

Hello ketoet,

Attatched is a price list of what I spent on the David Speakers. Prices are US Dollars (plus tax). I am using a subwoofer amp and used it's built in crossover elements, so I only purchase a couple of capacitors for the crossover portion of the design.

Hello gilmour,

Picture with scale. Tuba Home Theater (24" wide version), model is 5'7", David Stereo Floorstander (mine is 50" tall, 17" wide, 17" deep with extra trim), AutoTuba (18" wide version).

Nice work, how do they sound? Are these used with your THT and if yes, how were you planning to integrate them? Also why did you decide against the low diffraction face? Thanks..

Man I keep thinking of a reason for me to build some David's. Unfortunately I dont have the room but I am trying to make an excuse after seeing yours.

What amp are you using with these Davids?

Hello chrapladm,

The Davids can be wired up several ways.....

There is info and layout of the amp and wiring in this topic...

Hello Drey,
Nice work, how do they sound?
To me they sound "indescribably delicious" . The mids and highs are extremely clean and crisp and the bass thunders (with Davids you have the equivalent of 2 AutoTubas). I cannot find any flaw in the Davids.

I would also say they sound "too real".... They have startled me twice, I was playing Dave Koz, mostly instrumentals, and when a vocal started, I spun around to see who was in the room and during a movie there was the sound of a door opening and I thought someone was breaking in and my wife nearly had a heart attack.
Are these used with your THT and if yes, how were you planning to integrate them?
Have not tried that yet but might give it a try by using 2 subwoofer amps and setting the THT very low crossover so it will just produce the lowest ocatave or two.

So far I think the Davids sound much better that the THT and my stereo mains (vintage EPI 200's and EPI 100's). The Davids bass seems to be much more "musical" or "cleaner" than the THT and just as deep to my ear.
Also why did you decide against the low diffraction face?

The aesthetics committee descided that. (wife approval committee)
