XF212 1 of 3, "vintage tweed"

%95 done with the first tweed XF212, getting the tweed to look right is a definite challange. I sealcoated/schellac'ed the damn thing three times & the PolyShades still managed to get underneath in a few spots & darken up, bothering me to no end every time I look at the cab.

Finish time was over a week with all the coats/dry time. (3 coats sealcoat, 2 coats sealcoat/amber mix, 2 more coats seal coat, 1 coat Polyshades, 2 coats poly)



Just to re-enforce what many of you already know, T-Nuts were designed by Satan himself to ruin projects and crush self-esteem. I guess I get to make a new grille now!! Getting the stripes straight & even with oxblood cloth is a definite exercise in patience, I figure about 1.5hrs in the cloth alone.

Sorry for the ignorance buut is the gold material vynil or leather?

I was thinking of building a Jack10 or 12 but wanted it to look like the aguilar vintage cabs. Like the chocolate cabs.

neither, its more of a woven cloth, here's where I got mine.

There is a (cheaper) vinyl version available, but its not very convincing up close.

It takes a fair amount of time/effort/expense to get the artifically aged gold color (search for "fender tweed" on ebay). The material as purchased looks like Aguilar's "boss tweed" cabinets.

Is that the stuff that comes with a coated front side that is already warm colored, and an uncoated rear side that is more neutral colored?

Probably not much more difficult than any other tolex. I'd say the trimming/folding is a bit more difficult as this material is thicker and less flexible than the normal vinyl. Being that its semi-porous, the glue can seep through if you apply it too thick, and the water based contact adhesive takes quite awhile to setup & stick.

After the third cab & the mating heads are covered, there will be no more tweed for me!

Thanks! I put the first coat of Seal Coat on #3 tonight, hopefully I'll have it done by the end of the year. I find that I sorta like the smell of shellac, Poly, not so much..... (low WAF too! )

All three have different speakers, purchased probably >10years ago. #1 has two are Eminence GB12's, #2 has a GB12 & a V12, and #3 will be getting two Celestion G12T75's. Wish they were all GB's, but I had to get the V12 & the T75's to verify my fondness for the GB's.

The XF's meet the stated design goals, better dispersion/coverage with less beaming. The guitarist I lent them one two preferred it over a 412 in probably every aspect except it doesnt have the Rock Band stage presence of the 412, if you're into that sort of thing. I'd say I'm not, but I built two Omni 15's for bass guitar duty.....
