t48 review (and t36s comparison)

#1 Post by mloretitsch »

I finally had a chance to take the T48's out on a gig....well let's get on with the specifics:

FOH:
-qsc plx-1602 driving 2" exit horns from 900hz-20khz
-qsc rmx-2450 driving double 12" kappa pro 12's per side, 80-900hz.
-qsc powerlight pl218 driving a pair of T48's 24.5" wide per the plans
-DBX Driverack for processing

The fascinating part here is the rated 310W per side that I drove the t48's with. I never clipped anything all night and had a great time in the small club we were in. All of FOH ran from ONE 20 amp circuit and wasn't pushing the limits either. This is a nice change since the venue has poor power around the stage area.

First act was a RAP act...3 mics and a cd beat track. I played it conservatively and had just a nice clean low end thud. I ran over to check the amps and realized I hadn't even lit up the -10 signal light yet.. talk about efficiency! I leaned a little more heavily on the lows boosting 50-80hz about 3db with the house EQ (KT DN360) and this made the whole system jump to life. It was good solid chest pounding bass that was clean and pleasing to listen to.

The second two acts were metal acts. I had the same excellent luck with them as well. Good solid bass! About 100dbA at mix position and 110dbC slow measurements...I wasn't too far from the stage...maybe 30-40 feet.

Compared to the t36 Slims I have with the magnum 15's......These don't go as low which is really not a big deal. These are definetly more efficient with their wider width as well as being designed for high efficiency. I think they do a more faithful representation of that rock-n-roll kick drum sound the audience wants to hear. They are absolutely crushing at 60hz which is where much of that kick drum fundamental is at. They also sound flatter to me through the low end which is nice.

Overall I am satisfied with their performance. The boxes are large, but the vertical orientation makes them pack nicely in the trailer and a set of 4" blue wheel castors make them an easy one man move. Up and down stairs wasn't too bad either with two people since they really do feel about 90 pounds...a lot lighter than a double 18 my friends :) I got compliments from the rap group, both bands, and several audience members that the overall clarity of the mix was excellent and better than most other venues they've seen these same acts at.

I was a little leary of the kappalite drivers, but at this power level should work just about forever......

So that's about it...feel free to send me any questions about them.

Addendum

#2 Post by mloretitsch »

Just an add on to my review above since we like comparisons to commercial equipment. I had a chance to compare them to a pair of EV QRx 218s. There was no comparison..the EV's sounded somewhat distorted and really lacked the punch I was looking for. The operator was very proud of his system. In his defense the tops were QRx 212's and they sounded very good...as they should for nearly 1500 each. Power was a pair of EV p2000 amps (2000 watts at 4 ohms) on the bottom. I'll be sticking happily by my T48's (and t36s for that matter).

Here is a link to the ones I compared to. Same venue.

Did you have your T48's setup also to do a side by side?

I wish I did! It was the same venue however...heck I walked right up about a foot away from the double 18's and it just didn't have the familiar insane take your breath away feeling that the tubas acheive. About 20 feet out and they really started to die. Same physical placement of the subs.

I am trying to arrange a side by side at my usual house venue if the owner will let me. That's a comparison to the jbl double 18's.
