have a look at this, a compact assembled standalone PC board that you can use as a crossover and parametric EQ (effectively 12band ) for ~$100!
I think this is a game changer, because it makes ditching passive crossovers a lot more financially viable, being able to tweak output is just making it look even better.

That is extremely cool. I've built a small 2.1 music system with SLA's and a TT (soon to be replaced by a T18). I drive the SLA's with a small chip amp and the sub with a sub amp from PE (or MCM, I can't remember which). I ended up buying a Behringer active crossover as it's really not much more expensive than passive components but converting from Pro Audio balanced XLR's to RCA for my equipment ended up costing almost $20.

One of these would be ideal as I want a way to EQ the system as well as do the crossover and I DON'T want a pile of equipment in my LR.

I bought one of these. Minidsp rev b (2v rms input). It is very usefull. I am using the 2 way crossover with PEQ. The crossovers are high and low pass crossovers with many different slopes to pick on each channel, there are great 6 band parametric eq's on both input chanels and all 4 output chanels. The dsp also offers time delay wich is great for us lot using horn loaded subs to delay the mids and tops to bring them all in line. I can certainly hear and feel the difference now my speakers are all firing in time (more kick and just more powerful sounding)

The only downside to the dsp is that the outputs are only 0.9v rms and unbalanced but an add on is available for digital inputs. I have used 2 stereo pre amps (based on ne5532 op amp) which I have incoporated into the enclosure I made for the dsp which give 2-3 v rms output.
