Experimental Tuba 36

#1 Post by ewetho »

Helped a friend build a 24" wide Tuba 36 yesterday (OK Assemble he precut before) and got to test it out just a bit last nightl He still needs to enclose it properly but at 1/4 volume on 75 watts that thing is just incredible. WOW! When we cover the sub openings that thing started to get crazy!!!

OH and it was outdoors not wall loaded either. NASTY!!! Should be finishing tonday getting ready for paint and stuff. WOW!!

This was just a mockup really to test the basic design and see what issues crop up like warped plywood and assembly issues like speaker opening and seqting and even to test out duratex etc... So while not the prettiest it wa assembled tight and it just pounds!!!

BFM Designs are absoloutely the real deal!!!

I so want to build my own going forward such as teh TLAH and SLA with a TT maybe.

OH after hearing the 15" in the 24" T36 his 4 21" longthrow subs are fired!!! Never again....

LOL, just wait till you actually hear some music through it and just how much mud you were getting from your old subs. It will clean up so much you're going to think that all the recording must have raised the level of the voice.

And wow, that's a big cab for prototype purposes, I started with the t18

But glad I did, i LOVE it!

I don't see any braces in the horn mouth. Trust me, you'll want them in there.

When I built my first T36 and fired it up to test it out (without the mouth braces) it danced all over the driveway. Once I put the mouth braces in and tested it again it didn't move an inch. (and it was louder....)

Well the update for today of my friends T36

Image

From his email to me...

OK, here's the deal. The SPL meter shows high 120s to low 130s Db depending on Hz. That's as loud as the 21's. The 21's don't lose as much Db over distance but the horn hits harder up close and has unbelievable clarity. The answer; more horns!

His 4 21s are run on 1200+ watts. The 15" Sub 24" T36 was about 150-175 watts.

hey man, I noticed you used the vertical ribbed corners. I couldnt see if the lips come into the horns mouth at all? Is there overlap or does that radius and lip fit flush? If it fits flush on that 1/2" edge which corners are these, the Daytons?
I just bought 50 nice Penn Elcomms with straight ribs for stacking and tried em today, no good. Theyre designed to fit 3/4" ply with 1/2" roundovers, they dont fit my bfm cabs.....

Friend says...

You are correct. They are designed for the 3/4 stuff. I gave em a trim. With a radius on the wood they will fit darn close.

Update .....

Next time I will either laminate extra material on the corners and route to fit or use ball corners.

The chevrons are it in the plastic corners. I've tried about everything. Radius too big, lip too long, many reasons 90% of the corners won't work.

Hey Leland, PE measured the lip on the Dayton Chevron tread for me yesterday at 3/4". I need 1/2 or even 3/8 of a lip to fit w/out modding. Are you referring to the Dayton or you have another in mind like Penn ? A Penn tech just gave me part# c1537(straight treads) for a .47" lip..
