every once in a while, my whole system shuts down cold. All power is still there, but no sound. I thought that it may be the eq or the DCX but im not sure which. The last three times that it happened, i blamed my wife for hitting something because the sound stopped when she touched it. Yesterday it happened again when she put her hand on the rack. There were some kids around that were playing, and they were having fun shocking one another. When she touches my rack, could the static shock cause this problem?

A poorly grounded rack could cause that, but the real question is - which component is shutting down? Next time it happens turn your amplifiers off, power cycle -ONE- of the components in question, and then turn the amp back on to see if that fixed the problem. Repeat until you figure out which piece is causing problems.

Once you know which one is the issue, you can then start to troubleshoot why it's shorting out with a simple static charge.

Ok good. Lets assume that it would be the eq, is there a simple way to fix it, or would it be a good time to hit up the wife for a DEQ

That depends -- do you want to fix it, or do you want to replace it?

If you want to replace it, then of course the answer is that there's no easy way to fix it...

Ha ha ! Im going to pull the rack out of the trailer and have a look. Maybe the guy that i bought it from, cut the groung off and I didnt catch it.

From what little I know about these units, it's more likely to be the DCX.


The reason I say that, when I turn off my DCX, it stops my signal path, when I turn off my DEQ, the signal path bypasses the DEQ.

yeah, im gonna have to do a lil experimenting. It seems that everytime i get it all set up in the shop, the SOB wont do it.

Would it be reasonable that a peice of equip. could trasmit some low level voltage to the housing that its in ?

Very reasonable if it's got a short somewhere.

if i were to put a meter on it, ground one probe and place the other probe on the case, do you think it would read?

It should read if shorted. Be careful touching with both hands, or touching one hand on the shorted unit and another hand on ground. Or touching it while barefoot. It only takes a tiny amount of current to stop your heart.

It just puzzles me that it works great until it gets some static. I always thought that if it was shorted, then it wouldnt work. Until I can replace it, im going to insulate all points that come into contact with the equipment rack. hopefully the static elec. wont get to it.
