Winding my own inductors was a leap of faith on my part.

I have a good friend who is an audiophile nut. Designs and builds his own amplifiers and taught me everything I now know about crossovers over several bottles of a nice red.

He tried winding his own inductors to the spec you see here and now refuses to use anything else and he has tried everything else. He even went so far as to retro fit these inductors into all his existing gear.

There is an unmistakable "warmth" in the tone and I've heard a speaker where this inductor was the only thing being changed in and out and both inductors had the same specs.

When I asked why it made a difference, my friend said he was still trying to work that out. So I have no idea why.

I've wound my own inductors (for transformers as well as crossovers) for some time after I bought some that were nowhere near the published spec - typically around 20% off from stated inductance and wound with small gauge wire that increased the DC resistance unacceptably.

There are a few inductance calculators on line that can be used for design and will suggest wire diameters, core diameter, winding height etc, and though they all give similar results for the number of turns required there are often small variances. I always wind slightly more turns then measure with an inductance meter and peel off a few turns to get an exact reading. Skill in winding and neatly laying the turns and layers to eliminate air spaces will also affect the result.

100% agree. That is eactly what we did.

The formers are made from 12mm ply with a 35mm core and we wound as tight and as neat as we could. It took exactly 126 turns to acheive 0.6. Once done we wrapped the wire in a non conductive clear wrap to keep everything in place.

If any one is interested I'll post the exact specs for the ECW.

Please do!
What gauge was the wire Neil?
