Haha yes!
Physics in sound is unavoidable.
It's just that a lot of people don't know it, so myth becomes black and white, which becomes reality, which..

An example is why a bass player shouldn't use a single (or double) 15, under their 2 x 12 (or 4 x 10), which is what a lot of bass players may do...

Hiya Grant,
FB has a very wide cast and last week, the logarithmic Gods sent me a link to your FB page which then popped up on my screen. :o
You've constructed some great looking units shown on your photo pages; impressive work.

Dunno, just thinking out loud.
This questions I asked myself these days, too.
Which driver should I choose if I want the most Vd with the most efficiency and a manageable width.
Especially if weight (and money  ) doesn't matter...

My equations say a double lab12 with 1318 ccm with 800 watts. So I would call it the Golf GTI 1,3 :P

So, I delivered the new T39/SLAP rehearsal system to my dad a couple weeks ago. We previously had him using 8" Fender Passport tops and an inexpensive 12" ported sub powered with a Behringer iNuke1000 DSP.

Here's what I noticed;
-By ear, a single 2x6 shorty SLA Pro (16ohms nominal) required at least 6dB less input gain to have roughly the same output as the 8ohm Passport speaker.
-The highs in the SLA easily outperformed the Passports two 2"ish splayed cone tweeters. I quickly realized I'll need to deploy a de-esser or start pulling some highs out of the mic's now. Seth's sinister esses stick out sorely sassy sister!
-This system has more volume potential than my Dad is likely to ever use, even other than rehearsal situations, in intimate indoor gigs. A lot more. Thinking I could have easily covered his needs with the smaller amp (200wpc) and the Basslite S2012 driver instead of the 3012LF. Always an option if I need or want to swap them out for whatever reason.

Anyway, that's it for now. Thanks for the great design Bill.

Good one Seth :)
Only 6dB less?
I'd have thought that was a bit conservative having messed with a few Passport systems myself.

Kudos to you for doing what you've done, S'sss and all

The SLA Pro's are waaay more sensitive than the Passports. Trying to A/B them to compare SQ and response (Dad's request, my indulgence) showcased the sensitivity difference immediately and very obviously, having to bring the Passports up considerably to meet the bass output. Switch back to the SLA Pro and now it's waaaay too hot... bring it back down.

I honestly expected it to be the other way around, if anything. So, I was pleasantly surprised.

Totally switching gears here. But I just picked up a Dewalt right angle attachment. This is going to change my life when I build my next herd of cabs! I could see this being very helpful for attaching drivers in tight spaces.....

One of the reasons that I've gone to Lag bolts to secure speakers is that it's always easier to get a socket in a tight space. Even if you have to use a flexible extension or a knuckle joint extension. Doing that with a phillips head or square drive is tough.

Luckily I haven't built any cabinets that gave me an issue in this department. But that day may come. And lag bolts are a great idea as well.

Also, less chance of them slipping off like a screwdriver and poking the cone.

That's always my fear! I used GRK cabinet screws. They have a fat washer head and torx T-15 drive that is nice and secure. But a socket could be even more sure. Next build...
Those right angle gadgets are really useful in tight spots, but also can be kinda wobbly to hang on to. I don't use mine very often but it sure comes in handy now and then. And was a lot cheaper than buying a dedicated right angle drill/driver.

That's why I always put the circle of ply from the baffle cutout on top of the driver while I'm installing it.
