Four Fake Tubas you could probably throw together in two days, especially with your jigs and your skills. I'm thinking just the outside box with the braces inside the mouth, and a couple pieces of 2x4" inside to brace the "box" left/right/front/back.
Making "real Tubas" is well, making real ones. Baffles, internal panels and all the assembly mess and stress that goes with it. Maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way? I'm looking at this "problem" like ONE OF US looks at it. First thing I WOULD DO in your club is walk up to every cab and stick my head in it to see if it's playing. And I think MOST folks on this forum would do the same thing. But your customers are not "sound people" or "musicians" per say. I'm sure some are but not the majority.
I guess one of the possible pluses (aside from adding to the eardrum-crushing bass you already have) to adding more real cabs is that even if you don't have them plugged in, they could always be used as spares for either that club or one of your other places. Just a thought.
Thats what I was thinking too.. Im not too sure I know how to build fake speakers lol.. If I know myself I'll just make real ones

The question is will this still be considered "coupled" and will it cause any ill effects beside blown eardrums?

I'm most definitely not the "math guy" on this forum (or even in a kindergarten class...) but it's my understanding that as long as all the subs are next to each other, even in an L-shaped stack, that you're OK.

I hope Bill will chime in on the coupling question for you.
Effects besides blown eardrums? Your clients may vomit.
Before they are even drunk.

X2 on all counts! Even if that room was a school gymnasium, that many T60s would be overkill. Couple that with SIX DR280s?

Holy crap, people will be talking about that system for DAYS after hearing it for the first time...and using sign language after the 2nd time!

For some reason I can never do anything simple! Look on the bright side I'll never blow a driver

The fake ones only need to have panel 6 and 7 installed, nothing more.

Don't build fake- even if you do have impressive bass you still have fake cabs. Guess which one is worse to have people talking about...
Also, wouldn't the air mass in a fake cab cause issues with a working sub underneath it?

Maybe this has been discussed in this thread before, if so i apologize.
How are you going to isolate the turntables on a wooden stage right over the subs? Or is this going to be a CDJ only mixing booth?

I dont think it will be a problem hopefully.. The subs dont touch the stage at all.. There is about an 1.5" of clearance all around. the good thing about having so many subs is they dont get pushed that hard so the cabs dont vibrate at all..

Tennis balls cut in half work well to isolate turntables. You could also do rubber gym/landscaping tiles for the floor of that booth.

hifibob wrote:... So the big question is should I build four FAKE Tubas and just let the bottom row of 8 be functional or does it go against the rules to run all 12?

I think if you keep the proportion of fake to real cabs low enough, you shouldn't have any problems. But if you have too many, I believe the extra cabs could "eat" some of the bass, like a passive radiator.
I'd be more afraid of more of your bass being heard OUTSIDE rather than in. If sure gate to see you run into problems with the local gendarms and get hit with some kind of noise abatement injunction.

Don't agree with this. I think any (almost) completed cab without a driver+amp may eat bass, potentially lots of it. If you must add fakes, make sure there is no full horn path. Close the fake horns at or even before the first corner.
If I may add my 0.02 in the currency of your choice:
When you are willing to go through all the trouble to build fakes, why not run the last few yards as well and make them real cabs. Sooner or later it will be known or rumoured that not all cabs are real. No good for your reputation. Better to have them all flap the pants of the punters (and avoid cancellations due to insufficiently separated subs).

Put tropical fish tanks where the fake T60's would go. One gotta think about one's integrity, but if you need anything fake, make it the fish.
Oh, put the 280's on the stage and cage the dancers instead.
You'll get more busines.
P.S. one forum says the fish will be fine if you turn the volume up slowly, but not to play country.
