When you do it per the plans the angle of the brace takes care of a lot. So long as you are parallel to your marked line you can cut on the line or off the line. You push the finished brace in a bit further or not as far as you might have intended.
Well, how I did it was:

- Marked the location of the brace on the next panel.
- Mocked up the next panel position using a couple of screws and a clamp making sure it was in the perfect place... I used the next but one panel to help me get the position correct.
- Then I cut the brace to approximately the right shape & size but approx 1/16 inch too wide.
- Then I used a belt sander to make final adjustments until the brace fitted perfectly. The belt sander goes through the ply like a hot knife through butter so you go slow!
- Took off the panel, glued & screwed the brace.
- Set the panel in place glue & screw.
- Usually the brace held the panel in just the right location but sometimes I would have to use clamps to move it slightly.

So in summary - this worked well enough for me and seemed to be accurate but was laborious and caused a lot of dust with the belt sander!

I think I'll give the dado method a try next time.
