Clean setup. The natural finish of the subwoofer matches the color of the seating!

OK so a few comparisons with my Elemental Designs A5-350:

At listening position the Tuba (with the 300W amp) at 20Hz has about the same max output as the ED with its 500W amp. The ED has a little stronger bass below that and will reach about 16Hz. Above 25Hz the Tuba is a bit more powerful.

Conclusion: I need a bigger amp.

Unless you are comparing the eD with the THT from the same location, it is difficult to arrive at any conclusions. The room changes freq response a lot, and you would need to compare the THT from the same location the eD had. If your amp is putting out a clean 300W, that is all the THT will need, unless you highpass.

True. I should really get an SPL measuring device as well...

Curious though - that's the first time I've seen a plate amp mounted into the chamber cover - is there any concern that the backwave could stress the plate amp? I guess it could be boxed in if that was truly an issue, but then it would reduce the volume of the chamber?
I guess time will tell. The amp seems to be pretty well-built.

I checked all the bolts today and tightened a couple. So far I'm having nothing but positive results and nobody believes me when I tell them it's only 300W after the movie.

Ive enjoyed looking at your build I have the same driver but want to build the low profile THT so it can lay down on the attic of my house and output through to first floor ceiling My wife don't want it in the living room and I don't have a basement
wanted the mouth to be on the side instead of the end is there any way to modify it without affecting the horn response

Does your ".>" key not work? I think you said:

I don't know how you could make the THT output to the first floor from the attic. Maybe you could build a regular THT, cut a hole in the ceiling, lay the THT on its face and have the mouth pointing down into the room? Would this work? I'm not sure how that would work though as well as room response goes. Bill can answer this question though.
You could build a TT and disguise it as a coffee table, or hide a TTLP inside your couch if the WAF demands a low form factor.

Welcome to the forum BTW.

My blu ray of War of the Worlds came last week and i had a chance to see what the tuba could do (with a 300w amp).

It just about overpowers the main speakers and saturates the room with bone-shaking bass. The subwoofer can be heard or felt in every room of the house.

Someday I'll get a more powerful amplifier :fruit:

Horrible film but a great showcase for your sound kit, particularly the subs. The part where the pod emerges from the ground is immense, just house rattling bass.

Oh if you want another film to test your setup I'd recommend Speed Racer, it is an AV treat in that it looks absolutely stunning and sounds just as good. Also it's a great film, completely cheesy but definitely fun.

Today I installed some binding posts in the access panel so that I have the option of connecting to the woofer directly (of course disconnecting the plate amp). I pulled the LT.500 from my elemental designs A5-350 and hooked it up to the tuba and proceeded to test it on war of the worlds.

I'm not quite sure how to describe the bass...it was just dumbfounding...unreal... It shook every room in the house and caused all the animals to go nuts. The floor directly above the theater did little to dampen the tremendous force of the sound pressure... I am still trying to wrap my mind around that it's a single 15" woofer doing all that.

Forget an SPL meter - I need a seismometer!

I haven't read the whole thread but I think you're supposed to go easy with power to a THT unless it's highpassed. 500W would be way too much if you happened to get down to the frequency of maximum excursion, which isn't all that low.

IIRC 28V you can go without highpass with the recommended drivers. Bill or someone will sort you out.
BAT10, Bad Auto Tuba. Reverse folded TAT to fit JBL 1014D, 350W driver, voltage limit unknown.

@22hz. Above or below you can go to the drivers limit. IIRC
2x T39, 1x T60, 1x THTLP, 1x AT(not built by me) 6x DR250
I need more bass

But this gal's built like a burlap bag full of bobcats

No. THT reaches maximum excursion at 22 Hz, so high passing it at 22Hz doesn't do anything. High passing at a higher frequency serves no purpose other than to cut LF response. If you have limiting capability, which very few HTs do, set it at 28v. That's all any sane person needs.

I'll watch my voltage next time I demo it. Obviously I would never use the Tuba at those levels normally and the 300W amp produces more than enough power for the room.

I had my voltmeter connected as I demoed the Tuba to a friend. If I had to guess, last night I was probably pushing about 35 volts

I guess I'll go back to using the 300W bash. Don't want to do that again.
