Also - because of the way the human ear hears bass compared to other frequencies, you're going to want quick access to that knob to adjust the bass to different listening levels. I regularly find myself turning the bass down as I turn the volume up just to keep things balanced.
Wouldn't it be just simpler to use an in-line attenuator?? Like that, no power would be wasted, the driver wouldn't be overdriven, and he could just use a regular amp.

But don't know, I've never done this, i figured this might work since this is what i'm going to do with the xovers for my home system. Unless you spend a good chunk of money and a quality stereo receiver, the xover functionality sucks on them.

And oh yeah, about the PE thing - usually they're great about timely orders and all that, but i just place an order on saturday and I they haven't even shipped as of now. pretty weird. And I discovered I missed ONE jack plate for my main tops, so now i have to keep using them with the spring terminals

Subs arrived! :hyper:
I'll snap some pics when I start the break in tomorrow. That is, if I can find my camera. Might have to use cell.

As far as the order taking forever, I think there's something wrong with FedEx's tracking system. The subs arrived over 2 1/2 hours ago and it still says they're in Ft. Worth. It finally changed from Independence KY to Ft. Worth this morning, so I don't know whats up. Anyone else having this problem?

Anyways, tired these things out real quick in my bass cab and holy crap! They go loooooooow. Much better sounding than the 15" that's in there now. Seemed a lot punchier.

Anywho, break in pics tomorrow, build starts next week, and probably shopping for new car windows my next weekend. :D

Break in started. I'll only be able to do it in 6 hour intervals, so should take about 4 days, which is just in time to leave for the project. :) Sorry about photo quality. Found my camera, but couldn't find batteries. :(

I've got the subs laid out on the brick cause I just don't like the idea of them being on the floor.
Image

I've been told about half an inch of excursion is what to shoot for, but since that about what this amp can drive these subs to, I put the amp to just under clip.
Image

And here's the amp head I'm using. This thing likes to get HOT when I'm playing, so I took it out of it's case and got a desk fan. :D
Image

When I first wired everything together, the amp started getting way too hot after just a minute or so. I realized that how I wired it (everything in parallel), that gave me a 2ohm load, but my amp is only rated for 4ohms. So I shut it down changed the wiring.
Now I have voice coils in parallel, drivers in series, so now, it's an 8ohm load. :) Only about 150w of power total, but it looks like enough to get the job done.

We haven't got an amp for the car yet. Since we're on a limited budget that's already stretched wayyyy thin, we're going to hit up some pawn shops for used amps. Most places try to rob you, but you occasionally find good deals. :)
We'll be looking for something that can handle a 2ohm load (for car amps, that won't be hard) and crank about 1kw. I think any more than that and we'll be diving into power compression.
Or cranial implosion. Whichever you prefer.

After the first 6 hours of driver run-in I recommend calling it a day. This is a hotly contested issue, but ultimately the adjustment your ears are gonna be making to the new sound might take longer and be more significant in nature.

Still unsure? Please see: http://www.audioholics.com/education/lo ... ion-page-2

In particular the Anecdotes and Conclusions sections.

Run-in at least makes sure the drivers aren't DOA.

Alright.
Went and picked up the ply today. The best we could find, for our budget of course, was 19/32 5-ply CBX. Came out to about $15 a sheet. Got the place to rip the big cuts, about 2 per sheet.

When getting the first panels cut, I realized something that I'm glad I realized this early on.

Image
My cir. saw wasn't calibrated right and I forgot to do that first off.
But now it's all good and onward I cut.

Will start taking more pics when the pieces are all cut and the actual build begins. :D

Nice. Good thing you caught that minor error with the saw.
I look forward to following your build and install - and of course the results.

lol yeah I figured. 2 would fit. This setup will be for the event only. The shopbus' system changes from show to show, work in progress as everything. I have 1 week to get the amp rack installed, build a j110 center console for midbass, and deaden the front sheetmetal.....

I know, i know. It's been taking a bit longer to get started than we would have liked. Mostly the bank freezing the account, making it to where we cant get anymore wood screws after we found out we were short. :wall: My friend worked with the bank for a while while I got started.

I'm going to pull an all nighter to get this one done. :D I'm just too excited to stop. (EDIT: I'm too tired to get the braces put in and to be dealing with power tools. Panel 5 is in place, but no braces yet.)
Ive got the driver chamber done right now and I'm working on getting some braces cut so I can move on to panels 5, 6, & 7. I'll also get some pics posted in a few hours. I've been taking pics with my friend's Droid, but it's in his pocket and he's passed out, so I cat get to them now.

Also, heed Leland's warning: 28oz. PL tube are a freaking pain in the ass. Stick with the 10.8oz. tubes. Any money you save by by getting the 28s are burned in time being frustrated with it. :cussing:

Pics up soon, time for more brace cutting.

EDIT: Also, the amp came in yesterday. It's a JL Audio GMAX 1200w monoblock. We already hooked it up and tested it with the subs free air. It's pretty bangin'. :D

Yeah. These cabs have been so fun to build. We've built big horns before but i don't have to do any thinking, no prototypes. I will say without a doubt that the front panels are far better for us than the sides. I've built both. I should thank Wi for that. The flange we build in is so fast, so strong and we get one huge opening, 1 seal to make, and optimal location for terminal dish mounting (towards the wall). Highly recommended.

I'll be getting on my 10" midbass console Tuesday thats going to be a permanent install with 200x1 hifonics watts, yes mono.

So explorer man where ya at? I got your bass right here lol..
