Think of the difference of force on a weight vs a spring.
mmmm, sqrt-1, complex integrations, real magic that stuff, I did it many many many moons ago and forgot it all. Shock waves in pipe networks when you close a valve too quickly, that sort of stuff.

The imaginary unit j is at 1st an odd concept but necessary for all this.

The concept of phase ( acoustical and electrical ) is a key part of this.
