Personal electronic music history

Been out of the forum for a bit as work has taken its toll over the last 1.5 years. That being said, I am pretty damn stoked to be heading to Electric Forest in two days - EDM nirvana in the woods. And yes, Grant, i'm an old dude too
Will give you my honest feedback next week if I live to tell about it...

Festival was an absolute blast, now the sleep deprivation hits hard. Heading to the airport in a few, so will post some more later, but highlights for me were Odesza and Illenium. but there was so much to see/hear/do. Elohim put on an amazing set, too. Yes, there were some crappy (IMHO) rappy acts that didn't impress me. The three biggest stages had 38 (I think I counted correctly) double-18 subs in a cardioid ground set up under massive flown line arrays, with delay towers halfway out. I'm quite certain my internal organs are rearranged a bit from pre-festival. Oh, one other thing to mention briefly - picked up a pair of Loop experience earplugs. AMAZING! I loved them, didn't blow my eardrums and let all the music through, and comfortable (and stylish) enough to wear for hours on end. Worth every penny.

Well, I survived. Four days, maybe 4 hours sleep total? I don't even know, but the event was beyond amazing. The sound at the big stages was stellar. I think I counted 48 2x18 subs across the entire front, set up cardiod with FRF placement. This was also my first chance to try out some Loop Experience earplugs, or filters I guess. Amazing! I was in front 10 feet from the subs with my internal organs being shifted around, yet everything sounded great, none of that "is that blood I feel running down my cheek" fear. An comfy enough to wear 12 hours straight. Highly recommend.
Some of my favorites over the event: Odesza, Illenium, Elohim, Sofi Tukker, Rezz, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Apashe, Emotional Oranges, Lane 8, Satin Jackets, Forester, Zedds Dead, Infected Mushroom...

While EF certainly isn't my type of show, I would like to check it out at some point. I'm good friends with the lead audio engineer and know quite a few acts personally. I do think I'll hit LOF first, as the burner crowd is a good crowd.

I've never really gotten into what modern EDM is, aside from some cheezy tunes I listen to in highschool (I had jazz band to fulfill the and grow my own taste) I quickly moved to Detroit techno and house as my goto music and scene to "belong" in, for lack of a better term, and that music all has root in pfunk and Kraftwerk, who is considered the basis of all electronic music. If you want a quick history of those influences, I would highly recommend looking into the electrifying
mojo. It's quite a journey to dig though the classics and learn who influenced who.

Darude came *much* later, there was an entire world of electronic music before him; and I'm sure he was influenced directly by all of it. Breaking into the "mainstream* was perhaps only here, as many, many electronic acts had chart hits elsewhere long before he came along.


but hey, it's all a journey. Glad you've found acts and see them live.

.... there's something about EDM that just lights me up with energy ever since I first heard it....The time was pre-internet. So, I only had access to what I had access to. I could only hear what the radio played..

Absolutelty man!!
Back in 1995 I heard "Set You Free" By N-Trance on my Radio at about 12pm, I was still scared of the dark then so I'd leave my desk light and radio on to keep the bogeyman away while I fell asleep. The rain at the start of the track made me think the radio was out of tune, so I got out of bed and leant in to hear it properly when the melody started.. I'lI never forget that, and when the horn sample played, I invisioned being at the concert... also a core EDM memory.
"Silence" is still one of my favourites from that era.
At the time I was playing guitar, mostly rock.. Dire Straights, Led, Suzie Quatro etc
I love to dance to most genres, though fast forward through my EDM journey and Psy Trance is my preferred flavour.. Astrix, Neelix, Coming Soon, Phaxe, Vini Vici. Dance for me is quite powerful, I actively seek out an isolated beach on the full moon for camping trips, so I can dance with all the room in the world, and if I fall over it doesnt hurt!
Plenty of forest dance events also in my 20s, which are just amazing, so many great memories.
I still love rock though, that's the first love!

I absolutely enjoyed your story, Keryn I listened to everything you posted and enjoyed it all. I find I can put psytrance on and listen for hours on end. Something about it just matches my internal clock tempo or something. I'm also a sucker for the rock bands you listed too. The Dire Straights Brothers in Arms album is one of my favorites, I really appreciate the recording and mix quality of that specific album.

Sorry for the late reply Monomer. Back when you posted this, I went down that rabbit hole. Very interesting stuff and all new to me. Thanks for posting that all up, I enjoyed it.
