I think it's stupid parents that create stupid children, by example. There are certainly a lot of them around due to mankind being the only animal on earth that bucks natural selection.

And, since the publication date of that article (2014), it has been proven, and Apple has admitted to, slowing down older products, on purpose. Apple's claim is to conserve battery power, but since the users didn't get to have any choice in the matter, Apple PR is in the toilet. I recently upgraded from an iPhone 5 to an iPhone 8 Plus. iOS 11 will not load into an iPhone 5. I have an even older iPod Touch, 4th Gen, that runs on iOS 7. I can never get any more apps for it. Crying shame, as it works flawlessly.

Imagine waking up one day to find your 5 year old car is no longer compatible to drive on the road making its value virtually zero.

And yet I still run Word 2002 and Microsoft Picture It! 7 on W10. I bet I've still got a few Windows 98 programs too.

That is clearly Windows XP.

The biggest problem with using old software is security. As the companies continue to improve and develop their software, they have to stop updating old versions at some point. At that point, any remaining security flaws leave you open to attack. Eventually, the software is made incompatible enough that it just won’t run, or run well.

That’s not a big deal if you have a working system for a specific purpose, such as lighting, sound, CNC or other system controls, etc. that never touches the internet. Security and obsolescence are just not issues then. If it ever goes down, though, it might be hard to replace. There is always used and new old stock hardware floating about, though.

OOPS! I had forgotten that I upgraded it last year when I swapped the hard drive.
