Help needed understanding the db numbers regarding gain

Just one last update on this issue regarding gain and a Yamaha MM8. I still did not have enough gain at the prior gig, though I thought we did have enough having made a few setting changes on the MM8. That's what I get for setting it at practice with the PA speakers facing us.
Marcel, the keyboard player was getting really frustrated with me think he should go back to bringing his Roland Amp.

At last night's gig I changed the DI box used for this key board to an active instead of the passive DI. That fixed it. I only need the gain to 12 o'clock to have enough room. Before I was running it at 4 o'clock or so.

I don't know what it is about this Yamaha board that the passive Radial Pro D2 wasn't cutting it, but the active Behringer D100 was just fine.

Passive DI's usually have a loss of anywhere from 15 to 40 db due to the turns ratio of the transformer needed for impedance matching. Active DI's can use a lower ratio transformer incurring less loss; generally in the -10 db range.

Well that explains it. Though it is interesting that the passive Pro D2 works with no issues on his Hammond SK1. I have used the D100 on it before I got the D2. I was hoping to make setup easier, 1 small stereo box. Oh well.
