I'm just going dupe the Simplexx arrangement and screw an ASD 1001 on the back of the Beta 12 CX, plug the hole where the tweeter used to be and be done with it. If I want to get fancy, I might to the effort of finding some black gaffers tape to dress the edges where the black fuzzy carpet stuff has started peeling.

My answer is based around bang-for-buck.
Beta 12CX - $85
ASD 1001 - $30
Beta 12A-II - $80
6 1016 piezos - $14.70
Either option will require the crossover be changed. Cutting the circular hole to a rectangle to fit an array, even a 3-4 element straight array, is easy to do. Hell, I only have partial use of my right arm and hand, but I can still put in a little sweat-equity to save $$$.

Fair call DJP.
My only concern with any sort of piezo array would be getting anywhere near the port which is also up the top.
Can't be losing that port...

It shouldn't. The stock tweeter appears to be around 3" or so in diameter, so adding an inch of width shouldn't be a problem.
To the OP, just dropping in a Beta 12CX and an ASD 1001 is probably not going to give very desirable results, especially with the cabinets current cross-over components and values. My suggestion of the Beta 12A and a small melded array can be used without any filters, but should still sound fairly decent with only minimal work effort. YMMV.

some of that response lol.
A 12dB/octave filter with a 2K corner frequency also affords some power reduction to HF, down to 1/10th of power going to the driver. That would be necessary to prevent blowing the piezo's. The HF power handling could also be increased by parallel/series wiring the piezo's.
Not using the Beta12CX is a moot at this point, since one is already in cab...
