Re: Titan 39 Down Under with Pictures
Cheers, Leland. I had a whole lot of fun along the way.
Mr East, I've thought over the aluminum extrusions you mentioned, its a bloody brilliant solution. They sell it for an incredibly good price at Bunnings (big box hardware).
From memory, the internal radius is miniscule - a pencil edge chamfer at the most. I've elaborated on your plan and feel I can do away with corners completely. I can TIG weld but my sisters fiance is an absolute gun. Since aluminum is so easy to machine to size with very basic hand tools, I could pretty easily weld external gussets onto both ends of the piece of angle - effectively encapsulating the entire corner.
What do you think?
Could I possibly do away with screws altogether to make it seamless by gluing it on with PL or another appropriate adhesive?
I had originally toyed with the idea of finishing the cab following the theme of CV's horns, using a bit of checkerplate alloy in the horn mouth and on Panel 5, but that would have left me feeling like a teenager with a hotted up car covered in stickers
, each time I walked into my lounge. The Boss talked me out of it, unsurprisingly

I don't think you would get on well tig welding a cage around the whole cab. Mine has screws securing it every 4" or so, or something would catch and tear it away.

Re: Titan 39 Down Under with Pictures
You've got a point Gregory, I could always leave the front edges open. Its going to require some more thought.
Anyways, in the theme of this thread being a review, I've got some feedback from their maiden voyage/performance.
I had them properly corner loaded ( I think ), facing into a brick corner, outside edges about 8 inches off the walls either side. had my tops (Hi-Fi) about 5 metres apart on top of four milk crates each (wrapped in black fabric and anchored with 90lbs of dumbbells each, the crates not the tops) they only took signal above 120Hz. The T39's didn't once go over about 23 volts! The recall function on my multimeter read 23.7 volts AC. The 45 to 120Hz that was blasting out of the Titans was outrageous and clear.
They absolutely pumped all night long at outstanding volumes. The designated dance floor area was only occupied by the really drunk, high or masochistic revelers - insane levels of chest thumping bass. About 80% of my guests were dancing around 7 metres away from the corner where the roof ceases, out on the grass - still chest thumping, clear and precise, just not ear bleeding. I counted 75 people jumping around at one stage
All of my mates could not believe it was only two twelves. They all want parties, and my rig. There was a circle pit of 14 blokes (dressed as pirates) wailing each other and flying into the walls
It was everything I could have ever asked for and more!
I had spent considerable time sifting my MP3's prior to the party, to ensure that only songs with content the T39's would punish, got a run. Dubstep, Electro, and a lot in between, along with 18 minutes of serious metal (for inciting the Circle) A few songs I really like didn't quite perform the way I had hoped, but literally hundreds do, so I'm not phased by the extension limitations.
On a final note, one particular song (title evades me at present, I'm still hung over) has an extended constant bass note as an outro, it played around 11:00pm, every single jaw dropped, most under 30 drooled, the remaining over 45's pretty much packed up and left. dancing didn't stop till after 3:00am, not a single neighborhood complaint... I would imagine they are concerned about antagonizing me into doing it again
I wonder how they would feel if they new how much louder it could really go

Re: Titan 39 Down Under with Pictures
Brilliant write-up.
I took my T39s out for their first play at the weekend too, fair sized hall which acoustically was poor. The subs were just sat front and centre stood up as we had literally 15 minutes to get setup and the music going. Considering this they happily abused the room with gobs of down low. Hopefully getting to play with them somewhere we can tweak placement to find out what they'll really do.

Very nice... do you plan on using them for any events, or are they just for private parties?
I'd love to check them out in action.

Re: Titan 39 Down Under with Pictures
BitSmasher, they are certainly well worth the effort. I do use them exclusively at private parties of friends for now, as I don't feel my tops are up to the task of a paid event yet. Bigger and better things are definitely on the horizon, I've just got to sort out some tops.
Have you built any BFM gear?
On Sundays I could always set them up for you at my bosses industrial area near Manly? I'm well keen on showing off their performance, maybe you could bring along some decent tops?
88h88, It must have been a buzz letting your rig loose in a decent hall
What do you run for tops? When the Titans sing, they really, really make their presence felt don't they.

Re: Titan 39 Down Under with Pictures
On Saturday we had free reign for a few hours in a church hall, it was a MASSIVE space with high ceilings. Acoustically it wasn't all that but it didn't really matter as it was somewhere to push the system to see what it was capable of. The hall was about 100ft long all in all, we had the rack sat down in front of the stage and the RTA mic on a 60ft cable putting it fairly close to the doors at the back of the hall. We had Beethoven at 109Db and some silly dance stuff which was hitting 116Db with the mic in the middle of the 'dance floor' but I'd made sure to bring earplugs, my friend just wandered around with his fingers in his ears. If they perform that well in a space that big then in rooms with less volume they'll slay.Titanium Hand wrote:88h88, It must have been a buzz letting your rig loose in a decent hall![]()

The tops are Omnitop 12s with the base 12" driver in the plans and melded arrays, they sound really clear. Overall very very happy with the setup though now I want more subs. (There's videos in the youtube section of them playing in the hall).

Not necessarily. My first outing was with 4 T48 in a big hall, same deal as you, complete satisfaction. Put two wall loaded in a 60 x 60 bar and less than overwhelmed thanks to a less than ideal setup.88h88 wrote: If they perform that well in a space that big then in rooms with less volume they'll slay.
You need time to play about at full volume with different placements in small venues to ensure you get the big thump on the dancefloor and acceptable bass in the rest of the room. Have multiple subs to sprinkle if necessary, rather than stupid high SPL in a small place. Make your speaker leads longer than you think you'll need.

Re: Titan 39 Down Under with Pictures
I'm aware of this but it seems major issues with venues completely destroying the sort of levels you should be at are thankfully rare though annoying. With the big place we tested in we did the usual middle of the floor, V'd on the floor then placed them against a wall where they did the job, this helped my friend understand things better. As for cabling I've got a couple of 30m and a couple of 20m for now. It's Christmas soon, maybe Santa will deliver yet another heavy roll...Gregory East wrote:You need time to play about at full volume with different placements in small venues to ensure you get the big thump on the dancefloor and acceptable bass in the rest of the room. Thanks for the advice.

I think the rareness of problems is more to do with other guys being more aware of small room issues than I was. My assumption was that sounding good at lower volume equated to it getting up to pounding level with it cranked. I was a little disappointed.

88h88, if you're also crisprapper I saw your videos. They are likely the best sounding videos of any Subwoofers that I have seen, good effort. You have definitely done them justice.
I pump heaps of Wolfgang Gartner on mine too. Next time try 'Sofi Needs a Ladder' by Deadmau5, its a bit predictable throughout, but delivers above and beyond when the Bass kicks in good & proper. Did you find they performed better on their sides in a V, compared to upright side by side? Until I make a V-Plate I'm cautious about laying my shiny cabs on the floor
I'll have to get some slider rails for them first... and touch up the bottoms
