I ended up teaming a W8 with a custom sealed box that held all the goodies.
Inside was a lapei 20w amp and a tiny behringer mixer. a cord for a mic and mp3 player hookup and power cord is all that comes out of the box.
Volume is set and limited to sane levels even at max input from mp3 device.
He was and still is ecstatic to use it.
