Black sub, red mouth and braces.

Simple colour schemes work best as evidenced by those amazing blue Titans in the review section. 3 colours is fine as long as the colours are in the same sort of shades (think camo colour schemes) but when they're all different colours things start to look like this:



...which isn't a good look. Black for the outside with a contrasting colour for the mouth will look the most striking and effective by far. It's also cheaper to buy 2 lots of paint than 3.

/design nerd.

Im painting my autotuba black (duratex) with a bright orange mouth and braces.. I've always though the black/orange contrast looks absolutely awesome..

In web page design: "clown pants" patterns are to be avoided.
Most probably haven't had instruction in primary and secondary colors and color wheel concepts.

Attached Panel 9 and its braces. The 2x4 wedged in there is to help reverse a small warp.





Getting pretty good squeezeout on my joints, most likely because I'm using an unholy amount of PL. I had to open a second tube last night.

I won't be able to work on it tomorrow or Friday, but on Saturday I'll be able to work on it all afternoon, and will most likely attach the rest of the panels over many hours. Don't know when I'll paint it, still pondering the color scheme. The all black/ dark red mouth and black braces is appealing to me right now, as is all black/orange mouth and black braces.

If I bought Duratex by the pint, how many pints of black should I buy to color the whole cab? Or should I just get the big pail and store it? How long a shelf life does Duratex have if stored properly?

One gallon of Duratex covered two coats on:

2- T39s
4- OT12s
1- light box

And one coat on my 3 WH10s before I had to break open the second gallon. I've used it a year after opening with no problem.

I would think that a quart would be more than enough to coat the box several times.

You know, I am finishing up an AT right now and almost bought some Kawasaki/Monster Energy green for the mouth yesterday when I was in Lowes. Still debating if I want to do something flashy like that or just flat black. Flat black hides a lot of imperfections.

Quick concern, most likely a non-issue.



I've noticed this on some of my joints, about an hour or two into the drying process when I check its progress. If it's of any worth, I spritz my joints with water to give it its needed moisture (it's technically winter here now, so low humidity).

It's cracking in the PL (circled in the picture), and it appears to be superficial. Up until now I've always just spread a little bit of PL over the small cracks for the sake of being careful, but I think I've come up with a logical explanation for this now. Please correct me if I'm wrong, or if there is a better explanation it would be much appreciated.

Here's what I assume happens: I apply the PL, attach the panel, brace, etc, and the PL squeezes out and starts curing. The surface of the PL directly exposed to air and humidity begins to cure faster than the PL underneath it. It starts to harden, forming a sort of "skin", if you will. At the same time, the PL underneath this hardened skin begins to do its magical expanding trick. The expanding PL underneath the skin has nowhere to go and cracks the hardened skin of PL, forming the cracks.

I assume this is normal, correct? I don't recall seeing it in other build threads around here, maybe I haven't been looking close enough.

I've painted 2 x T39, 2 x OT12 and a rack with 2 layers each on a gallon and still have half a pint leftover, so it really goes a long way..

You really are using an enormous amount of PL.. If you are careful doing a consistent bead all along the edge when gluing, you shouldn't have any problems, however, its always better to be safe than sorry, so use as much PL as you like if that makes you feel better

I don't get quite that much coverage. I usually get two coats on about 6-7 omnitops or two coats on about 4 T39's. Depends on how thick you apply it I guess.
