Last week I did my first outdoor gig with the new sound system. We played outdoors at mile 24 of the Pittsburgh marathon. Previously I had used the DR's as monitors for mixing our demo, and was very impressed. We got the system set up, pinked it, and got to work. There were two bands, so I got to walk around and hear the system from several angles. The T39s just stood upright. The venue was one street wide b/w buildings, so V coupling them was not needed. We ran mostly kick, bass DI, and vocals. There was a little bit of overheads, but the guitar amps were loud enough that they would have been overpowering in the middle just to get some side fill.
Long story short, the system sounded awesome! I wouldn't tell you that you could take this into a packed stadium and blow everyone away, but I have used the subs outside a few times and they REALLY fill the space, and DR200's are the bee's knees. I would say that they could do upwards of 250 people with little trouble. I thought it was funny how the guitar players in the other band were looking @ the DR's with suspicion before we started, but after the show they knew what was up. I left all cabs unfinished, unsanded, so when they bring the sweetness it's a big surprise. I run this setup with a Driverack PA, and while the Driverack is expensive it also makes it possible for a noob like me to set up and deliver stellar sound. I love that unit.
And as an update to a previous post, the adjustable top hats I put in these feel very solid the more I use them. I would feel comfortable stacking 2x DR200 / side with them.
