DR200 - Initial impressions...

#1 Post by sstillwell »

Just got a pair of DR200 and...wow.

Comparing to EV T251+ I'd say definitely more efficient. I'm still in the process of dialing them in...right now I'm doing it by ear with my trusty 'Aja' CD. I've still got a bit of midrange honk I need to dial out, but nothing hugely objectionable. Right now, they are SUPER clean and super loud within the confines of the garage (I run out of tolerance for volume before they run out of gas). I've tried them both with subs (EV T18...not BFM T18) and without, setting programs for each. While the DR200 by themselves are not going to give you that huge chest-crushing mass of air, you CAN get respectable amounts of bass out of them IF you're careful and IF you aren't pushing them hard. I was putting a STEEP HPF at 60 Hz and a good portion of LF shelf up at 90-ish and was liking the results. With the T18s I was crossing the DRs at 108 and the T18s at 90, 24 dB/oct Linkwitz-Riley.

Now, to get started on the T39s.

I'll know more after I finish dialing in and get them out in them thar real-world sitcheeayshuns, but for now, I'm liking it a lot.

May be time for a shootout. I have a DR250 up to current spec. Ever since Tim's review of DR200 vs DR250 I've been itching to run them side by side. His 250 was not the current version. :bull: :P  Mine's just one rev back and the difference is mostly construction, not performance. I just don't have the time to build a 200.

All I have left is a 250, some wedghorns, and an original t24. The table tuba would stay home. I also have most of the gear needed for testing. It's cool having some fellow midwesterners in this. I was a lone wolf out here for a VERY long time.

Howdy midwest neighbors! I finally found where to list my location (left my brain in bed this morning). The little town of Ashland is half-way between Jefferson City and Columbia. I'm out in the country between Ashland and the Missouri river, which is west of my house. Lots of room for (eventual) speaker testing. 8)

I'm just east of K.C. and would like to hear any BFM cabinets.

Our band is playing in Sedalia at Yeager's Harley Davidson tomorrow from 11:00 until 2:00.
We've got two T48s for PA subs, and I use a DR250 and a T24 for bass guitar.
Hope to see you, but this is pretty short notice, I know.

We play a good chunk of that songlist.

Perhaps the shootout should also have a band jam.

Going to start a new topic in everything else for a midwest rumble.

Well, took 'em out for the first time tonight...just got back. I would have pinged you guys to come out, but I forgot that we had the gig until last night. Oops.

Got nothing but compliments on the sound, and a job offer to mix for another band (I was mixing from the stage and playing bass tonight). System did get a little out of hand for the room partway into the second set...WAY too loud, but we brought it back in line within two songs.

Was using two DR200 and two EV T18. The T18s were stacked and wall-loaded, with the DR200 on top on one side, other DR200 on a stand on the other side of the stage. Power was a Crown XTi 2000 stereo for the DR200s, and a Crown XTi 4000 with one channel for the subs and the other channel for the drummer's wedge.

I finally managed to do it...met my goal...2 subs, 2 tops, amp rack, 24-channel Soundcraft board, stands, cables, bass amp, bass guitar...all in a Honda Element. I can't wait to get my T39s done...and then the next pair of DR200. :D
