Had some wood shops recommend a bulk distributor that runs a route here called Wurthbaer. They changed from Baltic Birch to Vietnamese Birch, which has mixed reviews online. Sounds like trash to me. They use plantation wood like eucalyptus or rubber wood for the core with birch outer layers, more than likely just thin veneer. Buyer beware. Is this the Asian Birch you have referred to Bill?

Not specifically, but the climate in Vietnam couldn't be more different than that in Northern Europe, so...

Check out FB marketplace for local(ish) deals, just watch out for / ask about veneer faced. Cabinet shops seem to be selling a lot of bigger scraps from jobs at very low prices. Those would at least be good for smaller panels and braces, leaving you only to pay the big bucks for the large outer panels.

(I see now these are routed for drawer sides, but strips of BB could be thoroughly PEd into said grooves.)
What about buying 1/4" pieces, preferably larger ones, and DIYing your own 1/2" using PE adhesive? By offsetting the pieces several inches that would be a lot of PE making them air tight. Have to weight them down well to prevent different thicknesses, but could be a big money saver. (Be gentle now guys in your critiques!)

Re: 2026 Baltic Birch Pricing in WV
Finally got a response from my local woodshop on 5x5 BB. Looks like they only have a 9mm(3/8) option at $59 a sheet vs the $95 for a 4x8 at 1/2”. I just read someone mention building a T18 from 3/8, that could be interesting with a little extra bracing. Anyone else have any current prices you can get BB for at the moment?

Proper baltic birch here is sitting about $110 for a 12mm 8'x4' sheet if I run the exchange rate and it's making me cry.

Ok Zippie.....here ya' go.
Withrow Supply in Barboursville. 4x8 1/2" Baltic Birch - $73.49
That's $2.30 per sqft. That equates to $57.41 for a 5x5 for comparison. So, not way higher. My first set of subs was with 4/8 because I had done all of my Cutlist work for that. Once I realized the cost savings for 5x5, that's all I've used. Plus, it's way easier to handle a 5x5 by yourself. However, none of that matters if ya' can't get it.
Anyway......
That's the one I found. Might be more out there - just have to make a few phone calls.....

Thanks so much Bruce! I had Withrow on my radar and hadn’t pursued it as I was waiting on the local shop here.

I just talked to him, lol. He mentioned they can order 1/4 as well. So, there’s that for the WH6Ls. This is still all in conception I’m not diving into it yet. Just trying to get a plan in place and some things setup first. My long term goal is looking at something set up for me when I am able to retire, still 20 yrs out at this point… Wanna take my time get a few builds under my belt, have a rig or 2 out and running with experience tuning and mixing to gain some better hands on product knowledge. Just kinda trying to visualize a long term dream and goal I guess. A lot in the works that can go any number of directions. This has all been very helpful and is clarifying a lot for me. Ultimately budget and time to build and or run the gear will decide the pace that it goes. I can’t thank you guys enough. There’s really a lot to dive into and learn here. It’s been a very enjoyable experience.
