2026 Baltic Birch Pricing in WV

#1 Post by Zippie »

Baltic Birch 9 ply 1/2 in the OH, KY, WV tri-state area.

While looking over plans and researching local specialty wood suppliers I made a phone call to a local commercial custom wood shop just down the road called Quality Woods in Eleanor, WV.

I’m about an hour from Ashland, KY, Huntington, WV, and also roughly the same to Jackson, OH. Just over 30 min to Charleston, WV.

I was quoted $95 for a 4x8 9 ply 1/2” Baltic Birch the guy said it was four B, which I translate to BB/BB maybe?
He said it could have some visual patches that match closely.

Seems like acceptable material to me looking over grading criteria, but feels a little high on the price. Given shipping or travel I’m not sure I can beat it.

May get something cheaper for first build, just researching the ideal material first.

What are you guys seeing currently for 1/2” Baltic Birch?
It is also an order item and not in stock.

Back in October, 2022, a 5x5 sheet was CAD$116 at my local hardware store (genuine Baltic Birch). Last I checked it was a few dollars more.

5x5 will be cheaper per foot as that's the normal size for BB. I haven't looked in a while, but I was buying it for $30 a sheet a few years back, then it blew up. But, last time I looked it was back down to around $50 I think.

Look for a lumber wholesaler. The boutique shops are gonna be more. I use Roddis out of San Antonio. But, just do a search for lumber wholesalers, it will probably turn up a few names that you haven't heard of since they don't advertise retail.

Also, remember when asking about Baltic Birch, you may have to also use the term Russian Birch. Just nothing from China.

I'm in tx.
For the times right now considering all the economic issues and wars that seems about right unfortunately. A piece of 5x5 was 90 bucks retail I found a guy selling it for $70.

I was also able to find a guy that had a few thousand sheets of rejected customer b stock 5x5 for ~$30. Outer sheets on the pallet had water damage but they were 80% fine for the rest of the units. If I had the space and transport methods I would have gotten a lot more, I only ended up buying about 10 sheets. I have them stored in my garage.

I've had luck checking Facebook Marketplace to find these deals, believe it or not.

Just checked my supplier in San Antonio. 1/2" Baltic Birch 5x5 - $44.39

So, look for the wholesale guys. Call a cabinet shop and ask 'em who they buy from.

Ok. That sounds good. I have time. I was just surprised to find it in my back yard. Woodshop forums around here struggle to get it. This place doesn’t market it.

As someone up thread said, avoid any plywood from China!!!
I bought a model ship kit a few months ago and apparently the supplier "Artesania Latina" has recently started sourcing the plywood components of the model from China. The quality reminds me of dried Yak Cheese, it crumbles and delaminates if you look at it the wrong way. It may have more nutritional value than cheese but as plywood I wouldn't trust it to build a cat litter box. If I put it in front of one of my THT units it would turn to sawdust.

Lol. While we’re on the topic, I caught myself subconsciously taking note of step blocks at my physical therapist office today that are 100% Baltic Birch by the end grain. Is it like when you buy a car and start seeing them everywhere!?
I feel like I’m coming down with something…

I picked up a couple of sheets advertised as structural ply from a local supplier recently, he mentioned it was Chinese. It looked good with the 7ply B/BB grade, l should've taken my glasses though, because l didn't see the veneer...

In the process of seeing if it's actually any good, glueing bits together with the veneer sanded off.

If you end up with veneered plywood use screws to be sure the glue joint can't delaminate.

Yeah, it really is. Once you build something with it, you'll never want to use anything else. It stays flat and doesn't warp, even after years in my garage. It's a dream to cut, with clean edges. I've built racks, cases, light boxes, and even a steering wheel to replace a broken plastic one on a toy riding tractor. And yes, I put duratex on it.
