Omni 12 Tops Tuba 30 Bottoms
Brand to the forum.
As my title suggests, I am building a small system. 2 Omni 12 Tops, single 12, with a tweeter, 3 way.
2 Tuba 12 subs, single 12
I produce EDM ( Electronic Dance Music ). My purpose in building this system is to be able to reference my mixes more accurately for club systems. My studio monitor system is great for writing and mixing, but they do not allow me to hear what the audience will here with a large club set up. Here is my rough build list. Please feel free to tell me how I'm screwing this up! I am particularly wary of the preassembled crossovers. I would prefer not to build them. I know that's what Bill wants, but I'd rather not, lol. You'll notice my list has the sub low pass at 80hz, but I'm thinking maybe the 100hz would be better? I'm planning on using 8ohm drivers with the idea I can chain an identical set later which would half the load to 4ohms?
Crown power amps $830
Crown XLi 800 300W 2-channel Power Amplifier - tops
Crown XLi 2500 750W 2-channel Power Amplifier - subs
Baltic birch ply $880
Dayton 310-8 $80 ea need 4 = $320
Mid eminence alpha 6cbmra $80 ea 2 = $160
Tweets eminence apt150 $60ea 2=$120
Dayton Audio XO3W-375/3K 3-Way Speaker Crossover $62 ea 2=$124
Parts Express 80 Hz Low Pass 8 Ohm Crossover $20 ea 2=$40
Thanks
Tao

I hope you mean Omni Top 12, which is a two way. Omni 12 three way is not a top to be used with subs, it's a full range stand alone cab. Off the shelf crossovers are NFG. You don't use a passive low pass on subs with bi-amping.

And this is why I asked. First set of speakers built. Plenty of bathroom and kitchen cabs. I mistakenly printed up the Omni 12 plans, rather than the Omni 12 Tops. I will adjust my list accordingly. I will man up and build the crossovers. For the Tuba 30, because they have the dedicated amp, I should control their crossover range with the amp or outboard crossover? Or do I still need to build a passive crossover inside the cab? Sorry for my newness.

You need a dbx Driverack to handle the crossover duties between the subs and tops. Build the passive crossovers in the plans for the tops. The Driverack also gives you EQ and limiting. Limiting is not optional. With a folded horn sub, it is mandatory to keep from blowing the driver.DJTaoJones wrote: ↑Thu Nov 28, 2024 2:35 pm I should control their crossover range with the amp or outboard crossover? Understood. I haven't selected the Drive rack portion of the build. I hadn't considered that it would eliminate the need for the crossover in the sub when bi amped. I will add this to the list of necessary equipment.
Thanks

I believe this would do the trick? I do have a Mackie big 6 mixer that I can implement at the front of the group.

That will certainly do it. You can always find a used PA, PA+, or PX that will do the job and save some bucks. Check your local CL....a lot of people buy a driverack and never learn how to use it, so there should be some out there. It's a great tool....I have 4 of 'em.DJTaoJones wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2024 12:16 pm https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... ent-system

Re: Omni 12 Tops Tuba 30 Bottoms
I'm curious. Way back I went to a sound engineering school and our instructor used a set up with no crossovers in the cabs. Every driver had it's own input and was controlled by rack crossovers like this dbx. Anyone do that anymore? Or was he crazy?

Thanks for the tip. Found a mint open box PA2 for $300 on reverb . I've had pretty good luck with that site.

In the pro-touring sound world everyone does that.DJTaoJones wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2024 12:39 pm Way back I went to a sound engineering school and our instructor used a set up with no crossovers in the cabs. Hey DJTaoJones, I'm Seth. Welcome to the forum! At one point or another, we were all new with a million questions. Ask as many questions as you like.
Where do you intend to setup and use this system and what are the rough dimensions of the space?
