Italian Poplar is another option.

On my T39, I put two SpeakOn's in the mouth (panel 6 in the T48) for easy and clean daisy chain wiring when V-Plated and/or corner loaded, as well as two SpeakOn's on the back (panel 8 in the T48) too. I just drilled through the chamber panels and any other panel in the most direct rout to the jack locations, pushed the wires through, and sealed them up with the same adhesive used for the construction of the cabs, PL Premium.

One T39, 16", 3012LF loaded
Tall AutoTuba, 20" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421
TruckTuba, 8½" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421

As I expected, either wood prices in Belgium are crazy (and I believe that's the issue) or my cousin goes to a very expensive dealer.

Thanks for that idea, I'll definitely look into it!

Will keep this one in mind for next time, as the wood has already been ordered. Thanks for the advice, Bill (and everyone in this thread)!

I will make sure to take pictures of the process, so I can add something to the build thread :hyper:

Hello, i'm from kortrijk. The prices of birch plywood have skyrocketed due to the war in ukraine and the resulting low supply. I now use poplar plywood like bill suggests.
Where exactly in west flanders are you from?

The cheapest I could find here in the UK is almost exactly what you were quoted by that supplier. That is once
ive converted it to Pounds Sterling .

Baltic birch having become unaffordable seems to be pretty much Europe wide. I think I will also try the poplar next time. I think it's lighter too..

Good luck with the build!

Bruce Weldy wrote: Wed Aug 02, 2023 8:01 am No. You don't want a thin veneer ply. Baltic Birch has equal plies - Birch doesn't. Nor does oak, maple, etc. It's about the plies, not the species.
As usual, a little outside of the box thinking:

1: Since the veneer peels away easily and or with time, what about planing it off or sanding it off? Not much thickness lost; what, maybe 0.2mm?

or

B: What about routing 1/2" grooves just through it, so you're gluing the edges of the panels to the thicker, more durable core layer just beneath it? Some guys do that already for panels and or bracing. I did that on one of my T-60s.

Go easy on me, guys!

Dados are OK attaching to the first side, but if anything is less than perfectly aligned the second side dados won't line up with the panels. If you must use thin veneered wood use screws on the joints so they prevent the veneer from separating.

Ha! No way! LOL
Interesting listing format.
1: ...

or

B: ...
Hahaha

Personally, I'd drive a couple hours, one way, to get the right materials before trying to make the wrong materials work in this particular case. Unless, the wrong materials were free and/or I didn't need to create a finished product that would reliably stand the test of time. The 4 hours drive would probably be time saved compared to the time it would take making the wrong stuff work as good as the right stuff.

That said, I'm a huge fan of creative, outside the box solutions and I like the ones you came up with.

BTW, other than the two Belgian's making a new friendship connection, this is kind of an old, resolved, (walking) dead thread.

It is quite dead indeed, but let me inform you guys that the build of the T48 went great!

I tested it already on a low volume, sounded fantastic already. Really love the sound the T48 puts out. Going to test it on higher volumes this Saturday. I am sure that I will build a second T48 soon!

I want to thank Bill, Seth and all the others in the thread here to help me out in my journey. It is amazing to see such a community of helpful people. I hope I can do my part on contribution soon on other threads!
