Is foam + screen + gripper paint construction possible?

Helpful hints on how to build 'em, and where to get the stuff you need.

Is foam + screen + gripper paint construction possible?

#1 Post by Fastskiguy »

This may have been mentioned but I didn't find it. Has anybody tried foam, fiberglass screen, and gripper paint construction? Or is this just a completely ridiculous idea? Apparently people are making cabinets out of the stuff for their camper vans.

I thought I remember someone giving fiberglass panels a go, but not sure it ever got finished.
Give it a go! maybe try a smaller design like the auto tuba first. I still think that the driver mounting ring would want to be plywood though.
2 - OTop8
2 - T39
8 - DR200
2 - DR250
9 - T24
6 - T45
1 - Auto Tuba

Foam and fiberglass screen sandwich isn't stiff enough for speakers. It wouldn't vibrate quite as much as a drum head, but close.

The thought has come up a few times over the years. But, as far as I know nobody has tried it. If it ended up being a fail, I think some useful information could come of it. Even a hybrid build with the panels that experience high pressures out of wood and the lower stressed panels out of foam core fiberglass sandwich would be interesting.

Someone on the boards here has some aircraft honeycomb panels they've offered if I wanted to give it a go. But, I've got more projects in limbo than I can handle as it is. I forget who it is. Rich I think. Maybe.
Build in process - 2 WH6, one Alpha 6a loaded, one PRV Audio 6MB250-NDY loaded

Two 2x6 shorty SLA Pro's
One T39, 16", 3012LF loaded
Tall AutoTuba, 20" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421
TruckTuba, 8½" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421

I've tried it. I have experience using foam and fiberglass sandwich construction in boats, so I tried it for a speaker. It was stiff enough for a top, not for a sub, and that's with fiberglass cloth and epoxy. It also took twice as much time to build.

This perfectly answers it all. No it’s not a crazy idea but it doesn’t work. I appreciate it :)

There was one guy in/around Detroit who tried to build T39(s) with foam and glass sandwich. It was a bunch of years ago. I am not sure but, I think it was Monomer. Robin Hoisky also built a glass T39 and a glass DR200. I am not aware of all the final results.
