Tuba Haystack Configuration

#1 Post by mj90210 »

Hello, What should the mouth orientation of the tubas be in haystack configuration (4-16 pieces). Mainly, is there any benefit having the mouths mirrored from one another either on the top and bottom or the sides.

Thanks

I think he's asking if it makes a difference which way the mouth on the end firing subs are clocked. ie. flat sides together, tapered sides together, tapered side down, flat side down...

Seth is correct. I am not trying to squeeze out overall output or dispersion. I just wanted to know the theoretical correct way.

Thanks

I'm fairly certain it doesn't matter and you could clock them willie nillie if you didn't care about any aesthetic virtues. Could be wrong though.

With up to eight follow the suggestions in the linked thread. Once you get to more than eight extension and sensitivity are maxed out, so you can do whatever is easiest, even lining them up in a row.

Is one of these better than the rest?

All four operate as a single horn. You shouldn't use any of those with tops, but the wavelengths with subs are much too long for there to be any destructive interference. The middle two would benefit from inward splaying with a V-Plate. The one on the right wouldn't, the percentage of additional path length wouldn't be that much.
