Plywood thickness

#1 Post by vinceom »

Hi Bill

I’m going to build a Simplexx 1x12 ported and thicknesses of plywood I can purchase in my town are 10 mm and 15 mm. Not 12 mm close to 1/2 inch. 15 mm is better than 10 mm of course for the sound but what about internal volume? Can I use you external dimensions and size of the ports with a 15 mm thickness? Internal volume will be smaller and frequency tune will change …
Thanks

Th internal volume won't change enough to be a concern. Just maintain the same port area.

You should have your location shown on your profile so that others in your region may be of assistance.

Just curious. Could you use 10mm ply with a little extra bracing to save weight rather than using 15mm ply? Or would the extra bracing weigh enough to not make it worth the effort? Also, I assume this is baltic birch ply, but the OP doesn't state it.

50% more bracing would allow 10mm.
