T48, Driver sensitivity

#1 Post by supersonicsound »

Hi Group,

New here. We love horn subs and have always had them. We currently have a bunch of Bassmaxx B-Zeros, Yorkie 801Ps, and ES18s.

We're planning to build some 30" wide T48 soon.

We were reviewing driver options and Bill's notes at the top of the plans.

LAB 15 has an efficiency of 88.5, fs of 28Hz
Kappalite 3015LF has an efficiency of 96, fs of 47Hz
Both have similar power handling specs.

Here's the question.

With such a wide gap in efficiency, what makes the LAB15 a suitable alternative to the 3015LF? The difference in output would be tremendous.

Also, fs of 28 Hz seems a bit low for a 4' tall horn cabinet. Other than adding an interesting "lo and fluffy" sonic character (like our BASSMAXX), would there be any useable output from the cabinet that low? There definitely would be in a brick of 4.

Apologies if this question has already been answered. I looked through all the different threads as best I could.

Thanks,

SP

Raw driver sensitivity (not efficiency, that's something entirely different which is not measured with dB/w) doesn't define the sensitivity of the horn. The horn does. The same applies to Fs. The T48 plans make provisions for using a lower Fs driver.

To expand on what Bill has said, either driver will have very similar results in the T48. If it were me personally , I'd use the 3015LF.
Build in process - 2 WH6, one Alpha 6a loaded, one PRV Audio 6MB250-NDY loaded

Two 2x6 shorty SLA Pro's
One T39, 16", 3012LF loaded
Tall AutoTuba, 20" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421
TruckTuba, 8½" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421

Ok, I guess I said that wrong. Bill understood what I was saying.

Thanks for the reply!
