Help picking sub, TTLS, Auto, or Tuba 18

#1 Post by duder1982 »

Good morning, I could use some guidance on picking a sub for my living room. My system consist of Klipsch Cornwalls for the Left and Right and a Heresy as a center. I feel the bass response seems to be fairly decent without a sub for the most part, except when watching movies as I feel there is some LFE missing. So I would like to add a sub if possible. Its a fairly large sized room, so I know theres going to be limitation to what I would like to achieve. Size and form factor are the biggest challenges. I have TTLS plans and the prefered Dayton 10" driver for a TTLS, however in this room I am not able to build a cabinet big enough to accomadate that driver. My plan was to pick up a MCM 55-2421 which will allow me to experiment with both the TTLS in a 12"x15"x60" configuration that will allow me to hide it behind my couch or the Tuba 18 in the 18"x18"x19" that can be placed in the second potential location. I know both of these locatoins are not optimal, but its what I have to work with. The location that the Tuba 18 would be going in is 27" wide x 25" tall x 19" deep. Would it be possible to build a bigger version of the Tuba 18 that will allow dual drivers or a single 10 which hopefully perform better than one of the smaller cabinets? If so, would it perform better than the 12x15x60 TTLS or any Auto tuba configs? If I was to use this 27x25x19 area, I would have to use some of the height for a pro amp of some sort.

Thoughts?

Thanks

At the minimum TTLS, two of them. Anything smaller won't add significant content, if any, to Cornwalls. Subs must be larger, a lot larger, than mains, not smaller.

+1 on having two subs, not one. Even if that means 2 smaller subs.

Sell the Dayton, buy 2 MCM's, then build minimum size. You'll be building a second one eventually. Why not get it out of the way now?

Thanks everyone, at this point I'm only able to have a sub behind the couch and cubby. So in order to have 2 subs that are similar, I'd would have to with have plans for a long style tuba 18 or a small style table tuba (which I have plans for as well). But the problem with putting the table tuba in the cubby is the orientation of where the opening would fire directly into a wall. I like the idea of the 18 firing straight out.

I like the idea of it firing straight out too. However, subs are more than happy firing toward a wall or corner. And in many cases, perform better throughout the space when boundary loaded than when not. It also eliminates the largest possible source of boundary cancellations when fired directly into a wall/corner. Granted, there's still likely to be nulls in the space. The trick is to utilize cabinet placement to minimize cancellations in the primary listening positions.
Build in process - 2 WH6, one Alpha 6a loaded, one PRV Audio 6MB250-NDY loaded

Two 2x6 shorty SLA Pro's
One T39, 16", 3012LF loaded
Tall AutoTuba, 20" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421
TruckTuba, 8½" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421
