Tama - Imperial Star drum set

#1 Post by J_Dunavin »

My soon to be 10 year old has been taking drum lessons for just over a year now. His instructor has suggested it’s time for a big boy set!
Currently we have a small electric set and a snare.
He loves playing on the full set at the studio we take lessons at!
We’re going to take a look at this set tomorrow, they are asking $500
Thoughts?

Sorry not my pictures

ImperialStar's from Tama are above beginner level.
The kit look to be in fabulous condition.
Does it come with cymbals?
Or perhaps a better question is what's included?

I'm not sure on Tama values in the USA, but I do know it's been a buyers market in general for used drums for some time, so check CL and e-bay in your area to help you determine if the price is realistic...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

It does come with everything the original kit contained, so their house brand HCS cymbals.
In this case a high hat, crash and ride. Not 100% sure the sizes.

J,
I've had a little look around, and I think the asking price is pretty reasonable.
Cymbal pack new is about $350, a kit sold in Oct for $400ish.

I think the finish is hairline gold...

Picked it up today, the couple selling it were super friendly. The kit is almost like new condition, there’s barely any marks on the drum heads, and the finish is MINT! It looks fabulous. Sounds really nice too. Needs a tube up and some carefully placed moongels or some dampeners.
It’s currently stored at the studio, we’re waiting till after Christmas, we’ve got a plan to surprise him 😁

Yay you!

Tuning is an art (yep for drums as well as PA lol), and I haven't used some kind of additional control (other than on my snares which have internal dampers) in over 10 years.
Someone stuck a bit of moongel on one of my snares once, I'll never forgive that wanna be.

You see, properly tuned drums are meant to ring with a great mix of tone and sustain. So, if they're ringing, and it doesn't sound good, the tuning isn't right.
If you're looking at dampers to control volume, well, that's the perfect opportunity for the young fella to learn stick control to reduce volume instead...

In fact we just replaced the head on his practice snare this weekend, with his instructor.

He's stoked!
We're still working on our practice snare as well, quarter and eight notes, which are not his favorite, but then he gets top play on this :hyper:
