Oooo this is a great idea! I have several ADJ Pocket Scans that I can program to change color when he hits the kick, for example.
We do have a large area rug in there, 10’ x10’ and we could use heavier curtains anyway.
Our local Home Depot has the Rockwool safe n sound insulation, but which open weave fabric? Guess I’ll hit up Joann’s…

Can you get "hessian" in the US?

Re: DIY room treatment
Here's a completely different approach. I think I might have shared this before, but way back when one of my bands had a drummer with a kit that would take your head off, especially the snare. When playing small venues, everything got sooo loud trying to keep up with the kit (and of course, guitarists are always happy to indulge in that war). Anyway, the drummer and I came up with a DIY solution by filling the shells with foam and putting transducers under the heads that we used to trigger drum samples. Took a bit of playing around to get something to work well, but this was well before electronic kits became a thing. Anyway, it let him play as hard as he wanted and let the sound guy decide how loud the kit was in the house. Drummer played with headphones on anyway, so heard the beautiful samples with reverb and all and was happy.
The point being, if your kid is practicing drums and wearing headphones listening to whatever he's playing along with, something like this may be an option. You can keep the feel of playing real drums without driving the rest of the family (and neighbors) crazy.

Another option, is to quiet the source with mesh heads.

I have no experience with these and am not a drummer, but the reviews seem to be positive.
low volume cymbals are a thing as well..

Re: DIY room treatment
oh those are some good options to explore as well.
The first few rounds will be fun, because it is loud... theeen we are going to possibly need some solution to keep things under control
