Boat sub ideas?

#1 Post by himhimself »

I have a friend in Vancouver with a nice little cuddy cabin cruiser that is in desperate need of some low end. There is a step down area from the cockpit into the cabin that is about 50" long and 24" wide. However, it is only 7.25" deep. Not many other areas available to put a sub. I was hoping to find a way to fit a horn somewhere, but may just end up building a direct radiating box using as much of that space available. Anyone have other thoughts on what could work?
thanks

4xOtop J-array (Beta12, melded/straight piezos)
Truck Tuba (MCM)
Next up: 2xJack12 or family of table tubas

Thanks Grant. Good grief, I've built a truck tuba. For some reason I was thinking it was wider than 24". That may just work. Laid down flat with the speaker on the bottom, how much space should be left underneath? 1"? 2"? With the open end of the horn firing into the cuddy, it might work like a huge resonator... Something to thing about.

I don't know how much space should be left underneath.
Somethings ticking away in the back of my head about a few inches though.
Is it mentioned in the plans?

You just need enough for the cone to move without contact.
Build in process - 2 WH6, one Alpha 6a loaded, one PRV Audio 6MB250-NDY loaded

Two 2x6 shorty SLA Pro's
One T39, 16", 3012LF loaded
Tall AutoTuba, 20" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421
TruckTuba, 8½" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421

Don't forget the alternate driver mount on the edge like (I think Seth) and I did. at 7.5" wide a 8" driver is going to be tough to mount but you might be able to use a extra sliver of space to allow it.

I'm slightly bummed that solution struck me after I'd chosen a width and constructed based on elevating the cab for driver clearance underneath the cab. I could have made the cab a couple inches wider and still been within my maximum allowable dimensions for the space.

Use two 6.5s, but be aware of the specs.

I agree. Great idea Bill. I've always been a fan of the wow factor small drivers in an efficient cab produce. That's what brought me here to begin with, all those years ago.

On Parts-Express, the Tang Band W6-1139SIF seems to be the closest possible match and has only 6cc less Vd than the recommended MCM 55-2421. 161cc for the Tang-Band, 166.9cc for the MCM. But, the Vas is a little below spec. Guessing it would be close enough. But, who knows, maybe not. At $87, it's not too too spendy, but not a budget driver either.

TruckTuba specs/Tang-Band specs
Fs 28 to 40Hz/35Hz
Qts .30 to .50/ 0.40
Vas 15 to 45L/11.89L Slightly below spec
xmax 8mm or more/11.5mm
