I have been working on a pair of THTLP's for my home theater for a few months now and the first is now up and running. Having built a pair of table tuba's, DR280's and a single Titan 48, I thought i had a pretty good idea what to expect. I had purchased a pair of Hsu Research 12" subs on closeout from parts express a few years ago(PF-12100LP). At the time, I was not planning a THT, just a 6 cu ft slot ported box tuned to 23hz because it modeled very well in WinISD. And they did perform well, albeit a little underwhelming in absolute SPL as I was running them with an old Adcom 535 which provided 100 watts each.
I realized about 6 months ago that the specs for these subs were ideal for a THT and I couldn't resist. I purchased the wood to build 2 24" THTLP's and cut all panels to the rough dimensions and left it all sit in my basement for a few months. I finished the first earlier today and decided to take it for a spin. I started with it standing vertically in the corner. It sounded good, but not great. I suspect the 9' ceiling had it too far out of the corner to load it properly. I then laid it on its side and began experimenting with distance. It seems to work best about 12" from the corner. The bass is very clean and detailed. The volume this thing is capable of is crazy! I've yet to have the volume above 3/4 with the gain on the amp set just below half(running only 1, I'm using a Parts Express plate amp I had in the garage that I believe puts out 250 watts into 4 ohms). I'm a little nervous about pushing it any harder than this as I'm struggling to wrap my mind around how a single 12 can put out what it's doing at well below full volume and very modest gain setting.
I left it running and went upstairs. The vibration in the floor made my legs tingle in a way I've not experienced before. Pictures all over the house were rattling. When my wife got home she told me to act my age. I told her I don't know how, I've never been this old before. I can't wait to have the second one finished!!! If a THT won't put a smile on your face I'm not sure what will.

I'm happy to hear how yours have worked out.
So far, I've been using mine in a vertical orientation. I'm dealing with room treatment now. Just for giggles, I may try them horizontally.

Glad you really liked it! Amazing what a horn can do, right?!
I cracked out loud! I read the story to my wife, and she laughed too.

I'm quite blessed because my wife actually finds my sarcasm funny. Our house tends to be something of a private smart-ass convention. She doesn't understand why I need more speakers or why my truck needs to be faster in the same way I don't understand why anyone with only 2 feet needs so many shoes. We make fun of each other over such idiosyncrasies, but I could really care less about how many shoes she owns and she feels the same about my speaker habit.

That driver is rated to 400 watts, right? I know we deal in volts around here, but you're probably giving it about 50-100 watts right now. Imagine its full potential!! I'd be curious to know what voltage you're giving it...

Same here
Just glad I did not have a mouth full of coffee or thea. Or beer for that matter. Now that would have been a waste
