Loudness controls automatically reduced the LF/HF boost as the volume control was turned up, though not necessarily as much as they should have. At full volume they were out of the circuit. The disappearance of loudness controls with the introduction of x.1 AVRs was lamentable, probably the result of going from analog potentiometers to voltage controlled volume controls. They're just making their way back now as 'dynamic EQ'.Bruce Weldy wrote: My first stereo amp was a Pioneer.....it had a "loudness" switch that did exactly that. Re: TLAH and curved SLA
I hung them tonight...
Hopefully I will have time to get the curved SLA put together soon.

Nice.
If it's too loud, you're even older than me! Like me.

Re: TLAH and curved SLA
Thanks Leland.
Well, I finished the curved SLA today and hung it under the screen. I'm very happy with the sound these are all putting out. I did the auto calibration and I seem to be good now with the small issues I was hearing before.
One thing... I'm going to post pics of the crossover I built for this center. All three look just like this one but I'm second guessing myself as I've never built a crossover. I just wanted to make sure I did everything right. Thanks in advance for taking a look!

Re: TLAH and curved SLA
Blast from the past! This was my TLAH and curved SLA build back in the day.
I have now moved to a new home and an ever changing theater room is taking shape. I was planning to covert my curved SLA to a TLAH (it's behind the screen now). I've read through the updated plans and I'm starting to consider building all new front L,C,R speakers. When I built mine back in the day I was on a pretty tight budget and ended up using some budget woofers and tweeters. The woofers are 5.25" I think which I believe spaces them a bit further than recommended. Also, my baffles were built out of 3/4" pine and the cabs were built out of MDF. They sound good but I think they could be better.
So my question... Is it worth it to build TLAH's or would the smaller SLA's do everything I need them to? The room is 13'x23' with an 8'ceiling. My main seats are 15' from the screen. Right now the TLAH's are behind the 110" screen (8 feet apart) but I think I'm going to widen them closer to the corners. The screen sits on a baffle wall with about 14" of space so there's all sorts of options for mounting them. I'm looking at the Emotiva Basx 3 channel amp to power the L,C,R so I'm not super concerned about powering whatever I build. Also, 95% of the time (or more) this room will be used with 1-3 people sitting in the same 1-3 seats watching movies. I'm thinking SLA's but I'm open to advise and suggestions. Thanks!

Re: TLAH and curved SLA
If I still had the TLAHs, I'd reuse them. I can't see why one would make new cabs. However, to convert the centre SLA to a TLAH makes sense to me.

It's kinda hard to follow but it looks correct. Did you look at the sketchup file? If you lay it out just like that, you should be good to go. I know how confusing wiring up SLA's can be. The plans were updated with a sketchup wiring diagram the week I started mine. It was a life saver.ecut1 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 19, 2014 9:19 pmOne thing... Re: TLAH and curved SLA
No, that last picture is how they got installed.
In the updated plans it talks about not going larger than a 4 inch driver unless using square drivers. I have a calibration mic now so I'll run some tests and post some graphs soon. Carpet guy is coming tomorrow.
