Dayton Audio RSS315HE-22 12" Reference Series High Excursion Subwoofer

#1 Post by joblow88 »

So i just fell uppun theses. https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Au ... hm-295-291
I know it is not a pro sub, but it has pretty impressive specs. Vd almost double than a lab 12. Have dayton been tried and are knowed for failiure or it is just unknow territory? I just got accepted for a grant to make speaker so i would not mind to be a guinea pig for the comunity. I also like the fact that the alluminum cone is welded to the voice coil former wich makes it a big ass heat radiator.

these in a wide t30 would be a no compromise for portability, range and output.

Thx

I haven't heard of anyone using the Daytons in place of the pro drivers. Typically, Bill's recommendation is to avoid non-pro drivers as their build is not as robust. From the Dayton website..."Optimized for small enclosures and with dual 2-ohm voice coils, the RSS315HE-22 is flexible enough to add breath taking bass to high output home and car audio designs."

With that said, I've always been curious to hear what one of these could do in a Titan.
Otop 12 x 4 (Delta Pro 12-450a) 2x melded, 2x straight
Titan 39 x 4 (3012LF) 20" wide

That much excursion might cause throat distortion at the least and at worst a shredded cone.

Also, at 800w the maximum excursion is 14mm, so the added complexity of the build dictated by that surround isn't going to get more output anyway.

About cone damage is it possible to even happen with an alluminum cone? Also about the distortion, wouldn't it happen at the highest power but i could drive them not that much but still have a higher output than any thing else? also if there is driver damage they provide a 5 year waranty wich give me plenty of time to test them to the limit and see what happen.

And why would that be the case? Higher Xmax doesn't give higher sensitivity, it gives less, due to the higher moving mass. The RSS315 HE has specs optimized for use in a small sealed box. Said specs are the opposite of what's best in a horn.
