Baltic Birch prices 11/21

#1 Post by Tom Smit »

I was at my local HomeHardware store (home centre similar to Home Depot or Lowes) to inquire about pricing and availability of 4x8 sheets of BB, since I regularly get my 5x5 sheets there. It was a bit of a shock. The 4x8 sheet of 12mm is $142 each. 5x5 12mm sheets are currently $73, until their in-store supply runs out. That is twice the price from 14 months ago! When they get new stock in, it will be priced at $84 each. Talking with a manager there, he told me that part of the reason is that the land is/was not frozen enough in Russia to harvest as much as they want. Also, some (unknown) country has secured about 80% of what Birch will be harvested (?).

Prices on everything are nuts, all because of Covid.

Surprisingly my local Woodcraft store claims their 5x5 BB has not changed in price all through Covid. I didn't even know they existed and stumbled upon them looking for 1/8 for my DR200 build. I think sheets were $55ish, can't remember, it was a month ago or so. I was in last weekend to get another 1/8 ply but 5x5 were out of stock. I'll get in there again this weekend and check.

I buy direct from the importer now. Some of my other cabs use 3/4. It went to $89 a sheet last month, landed, that's wholesale. Almost double what I paid in May.

If anyone is close to Green Bay Wi, Bay Ridge Plywood and supply has Baltic Birch cut offs for:
13x48 $4.00
13×60 $5.00
6"×48 $1.50

Got all this for $80. I’ll still need to buy two or three full size sheets to complete my new build, but this will really save me some $

Bought 4 sheets of 5' x 5' BB today at $65 each. Compared to what I've seen in the last two years I'm pretty happy with that.
Otop 12 x 4 (Delta Pro 12-450a) 2x melded, 2x straight
Titan 39 x 4 (3012LF) 20" wide
