OT8 driver options

#91 Post by J_Dunavin »

I know the Beta 8a is fantastic for the cost, and there are a few Delta pro 8a out there.
My understanding is that both of these would work just fine, especially since the FAITAL PRO 8PR210 is so expensive. When it come to sound quality though is the Delta Pro 8a really any better than the Beta? I know the plans say its a few more db sensitive in the midrange.
I was also looking over some older plans (not for the OT8) and it mentions the Eminence LA8-CNMB. Was there a 16 ohm version of this? Maybe it's a moot point as i can't seem to find any for sale anyway.
Side question... is there any advantage to fabricating a throat filler like the DR? Guess the design is quite a bit different, just looking for anything extra that could be done.
And since we're on this rabbit hole, what about compression horn options?
I have note that says the Eminence F151M-8 is an acceptable option to the ASD1001, but i'm not sure where i got that from.
I did like the piezo arrays on my DRs, just want to try something different.... looking for some super smooth sound quality out of these OT8's. Not that my DRs weren't, I loved them! Just thinking if these are going to be my only tops, i want to do them right the first time.

Beta vs Delta: If the cost isn't an issue, I'd personally scoop up some of the remaining Delta Pro's. If for nothing more than to have the feeling I took advantage an upgrade option. Also, it seems that now-a-days sound quality doesn't mean what it used to mean. With todays signal processing, it's fairly easy to create a decent result with almost anything... assuming it's reasonably capable of creating the intended frequency spectrum.

It's in a sticky at the top of the DR, Omni, etc. sections of the forum. Eminence HF Drivers

Those cardboard mockups are an awesome visual  I look forward to seeing which direction you choose.

Also... it's the NSD-2005 that the F151M-8 replaces. The ASD1001 is still in production, but has a higher crossover frequency than the NSD 2005/F151M-8 options.
