Ok, lets chat about snakes.......building out another rack case for a band to add some in-ears. Already had a rack panel built for this rack that housed a driverack and had hook-ups for the guitar player's mic receiver and guitar receiver. The two receivers moved out of the rack a long time ago, so there's room to add some more inputs in the rack to access the new Shure In-ear transmitters.

Anyway, that should be finished up Friday or Saturday.....waiting on some connectors from Part Express. Needed some right-angle TRS for the Shures as the rack wasn't deep enough to use standard XLRs.

Figured since there would now be 4 cables coming to the rack from the board, I might as well use that piece of leftover 4 pair snake cable and build a little 10 foot snake to take care of the Mains L/R and the two Shure transmitters.

Even though the cables are in a jacket, I always add heat shrink to build 'em up a little....
IMG_3167.JPG
Usually, I just put a larger piece of heat shrink over the area where they fan out....that works fine, but I've never liked the look of the transition. So, this time I put a smaller piece of heat shrink to act as a collar over the transition from snake to fan, then covered that with the longer and larger shrink. I really like this much better.

Neutrik connectors and it's finished....

I'll post some finished pics of the rack for you gear porn aficionados when it's done.

Oooohhh... NICE.

I've got my popcorn ready!

BTW, here's my IEM snake (used digitally for 8 channels/4 stereo IEM mixes, not 4 pair of analog) ...

What are you using for monitor controllers? Are they wired or wireless?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by monitor controllers. The monitor mix is mixed in a Midas M32, then I use the "Ultranet" port (their seemingly proprietary use of AES50 digital audio protocol), which connects with standard CAT5e, to a Klark Teknik 8 output box (model DM8008) which is basically an Ultranet/AES50 DAC in a 1RU chassis with 8 XLR outs. In the mixer, route the bus/aux outputs to the Ultranet outputs and just plug in the wireless IEM transmitters to the box and they're ready to go.

The whole package can easily be mounted in a 2RU rack bag or roller case. Leave it home if you don't need it, easy to bring when you do. Power and a CAT5e is all it needs. And reportedly, you can use up to 330' of CAT5e... so you can put it pretty much anywhere it works out best.

A little bit of a spendy option, but a pretty handy way to do it. And no mixing up input or output connections.

I've been using the Audio2000s Transmitters with pretty good results so far. Not that I actually use them as much as I'd like. We did try out the high end Shure IEM transmitter/receivers, but couldn't tell enough difference in SQ or range to justify the cost, so it got returned. We didn't test the range beyond our needs, so take that for what it's worth... I didn't see how far each would go down the street or anything.

What I'd really LOVE is if someone would start making IEM transmitters with Dante built in at a reasonable price. Now THAT would be cool! Maybe I should call China. Anyone want to invest? :)

Ok, so you are just connecting to a stage box via Cat5 for outputs, then to the wireless units. By monitor controllers, I was talking about something like the Aviom systems or the Presonus Earmix. They connect via Cat5 and your ears plug directly from that. It's a wired solution that's used mostly in studios and occasionally in live situations like churches.

The reason I thought that was what you were doing was because of the pic of the Cat5 cable - I thought you were saying you didn't need XLRs to run your ears....

XLR's? Yes, 24 inchers from the box to the transmitters. XLR snake? No. It's CAT5 from the mixer to wherever the transmitter rack is.

I really like how well your snake came out. Better than store bought IMO.

So the whole forum is collapsing into one thread? Inefficient I would think.

It's a 10 footer - plenty to run from the board (which is always on the side of the stage now), to the rack. Mixing is pretty much all with an iPad for this band. It's getting hard to find a place where you can get a snake out front.

As far as quality - I use Rapco/Horizon cable and only Neutrik connectors. My cost to build that little snake was between $30-35. You might be able to find one cheaper, but it will be barely-shielded crappy wire and those lousy connectors with the crimped strain-relief.

In fact, boys and girls.......let's do a lesson in identifying crappy cables. The easiest way to tell that you have a crappy cable is the single screw on the connector. That means that the only strain-relief is from a crimp band around the cable like you see on a guitar cable. That single screw just holds the housing on. The other indicator is the thin-looking metal on the end of the female XLRs. It's not continuous, but has slots and gaps.

Here's an example of the connectors you should run away from. Hover your mouse over the picture and you can see what I'm talking about....

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... lsrc=aw.ds

You can bet that if you peel back the jacket on that cable, you'll find a lousy shield with probably 50% coverage.

If you don't build your own cables - learn how. It's not that hard and you'll have high quality cables that will last forever. I fix cables for my friends all the time.....but, never my own - they just don't break.

It's a skill set that everyone in audio should have.

Not really, but it's a place to just throw out a lot of different stuff.

A great place to chit chat about little things that aren't necessarily worthy of, or helpful in having their own thread. It's especially nice when things are slow around here, to just be able to post something random and have something to talk about.

Give it a try Dale! What have you been up to lately? Any audio (or other, really) project's you're working on? Any new gear you want to talk about? Old gear? Lawnmower?

Now, before you reply in this thread. Ask yourself, should I just start a thread about it? Is what I'm about to share with the group worthy of it's own thread?

And right about now, I'd think you'd start to understand the point of this thread.

I got some left over 12mm poplar ply (1/2") from a home improvement project. I have no time nor immediate audio needs right now but might put that into parts of a T39 or Simplex 10 at some point.

I've thought a bunch about building a pair of Simplexx 10s.....one with a plate amp that would drive them both and my T24.. Have no idea when or where I'd ever use it. I guess to a real BFMer, that shouldn't be an obstacle to making sawdust....

Well said Bruce :cowboy:
Music is still on the back burner for me, both because there is not much happening in music here just yet, as well as me being quite busy with other things. Work, family, home improvements that are long overdue. The only thing that is really keeping me back from making sawdust is lack of time.

Re: What's to chat about? Supertonic

I just learned about the supertonic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tR32h5j ... QpFEJRk2Zw
I, also, learned that "The Weekend" has a number of songs that have the same melody (it's in the video).

Music theory is so fascinating. The number monster in my mind went straight to google to learn a little more about Supertonic and it's frequency relationship to the Tonic... 1.125 x the Tonic frequency. Might explain why it plays so well in so many chords. Pretty interesting stuff. My mind grabbed on that sucker strong and quick there for a minute. Had never heard the term before. Thanks for the share Tom
