Update: Re: NEW BUILD - Omni 15 Tall Boy in New Zealnd
Hi All,
Apologies for silence on my build.
I haven't forgotten about you or ceased my build etc.
Have been on other matters and will be travelling away all of next week.
All good.
I've done a few more things on my cab and getting close to finishing the outside.
See ewes soon.
Cheers

Update 14: some pics NEW BUILD - Omni 15 Tall Boy in New Zealnd
Gidday BfM friends,
Today seemed as good a day as any other to recommence work on my cab.
The sun came out and was quite warm.
With help of my 2 youngest Grand Daughters, we rolled on a first coat of Duratex.
Very expensive down here in New Zealand - NZ$44 for 1 Pint!!! (USD$29)
Seemed to go on easy but was thin enough to reveal blemishes under the skin so to speak.
Once the next coat goes on, hopefully most will be covered up.
Some pics attached showing today's status.
Cheers All

Re: NEW BUILD - Omni 15 Tall Boy in New Zealnd
Yup
The Duratex was quite thin this morning although hard as nails.
With hindsight, I should have painted the entire cab black first.
I assume this would have allowed the wood and white car fille to soak it up and provide a cleaner surface for the first coat of finish.
For those areas where my fina surface finish is less than desired, will the Dtx be OK to sand off n recovered?
Cheers

I would think so. It certainly worked for the guy in the video below...@ 09:58 and my findings on this end were just the same .

Re: NEW BUILD - Omni 15 Tall Boy in New Zealnd
Thanks Radian,
I've got quite a few dodgy looking areas which I will need to sand off, re -fill, sand and redo.
That's the problem of being a Virgo; to bloody finnicky and fussy to go with what I've already got!!
So impatient now to get it finished I just feel like leaving it as it is.
Cheers

Throw on a few coats of flat black before you use the duratex.
When it costs that much, undercoating with flat black makes it go sooooo much further...

Re: NEW BUILD - Omni 15 Tall Boy in New Zealnd
David, it's nice to see the progress. You'll be playing sweet music in no time.
I get a little anal about the finished product appearance and little things showing through the finish drive me nuts too. Things like end grain of the ply and seams where 2 panels meet showing through, or obvious filler buildup that didn't get sanded down enough that present as wavy when viewed from certain angles. Sometimes things that are insignificant to unknowing bystanders still stick out like a sore thumb to me. In my admittedly limited experience, I've found that skinning the whole cab with a filler prior to any paint, taking the time to really sand things down nicely, and not being too rushed or impatient to be willing to spot fill "just one more time" is well worth the time invested in the end. Sometimes I have more patience. Other times, I just want to plow through and get the project completed and don't put in the extra effort.
Still working out what filler is best for the purpose skinning the whole cab. Bondo, no matter how I mix it, seems to clog my sandpaper. But, it's great for building up more significant imperfections. Maybe I should try other sandpaper. I've tried other fillers similar to drywall joint compound. They go on nice and sand down nicely, but make one heck of a mess with all the dust that seems to magically make it's way into the least likely places (everywhere!!!). I've got my eye on some other wood fillers to try out, however the downside with them is they aren't as economically friendly. Not horribly expensive, but could add up over several cabs.
Just my input. Other guys here seem to get good results without skinning the entire cab. So, perhaps it's just my initial workmanship that needs all the extra makeup to look the way I want it to look.
Keep it up. You're almost there!

Re: NEW BUILD - Omni 15 Tall Boy in New Zealnd
when i need something with a show quality finish i first fill the bigger errors with normal filler, sand that down nice and flat. then spray the whole thing with spray on filler (if that's the correct translation). i have it in a 2 component version for a spaygun but it's also available in rattlecan form. it's main use is for autobody application.
i've never used that for PA speakers that get banged up though, more for HT speakers
