DR250’s x 4, 25th April 2020.

#1 Post by Grant Bunter »

I spoke about this in my build thread, in a limited sense, but this is about what 4 x DR250 (and a pair of revamped old 15’s) can really do!

Anzac Day is the 25th April every year. It is held to honour our servicemen and women who served and/or died, particularly at Gallipoli in Turkey during WW1, but has become a dedication to all theatres of war for Australians and New Zealanders that have served since (and may have paid the ultimate sacrifice).
For me it’s a big deal, I have Grandfathers, my Father, an Uncle, Cousins, and a bunch of mates who’ve all served, and some died.
Our local Fire Brigade (I’m 2 IC) is proud to march every year as well.

The brief: Due to Covid, instead of our regular march and service, “broadcast” those parts of the ceremony via PA and try to cover the village, at 6am, so all members of our community could stand at the end of their driveway into their residence, and remember as a community, with a lit candle.

Area to be covered: farthest house in a straight line is 800 metres/half a mile. Hard left and right 400m/ 1/4 of a mile. And a few houses behind, say 70 metres.

The chain; laptop to Soundcraft Spirit live to DCX to amps, 2 x stacks of DR250’s, and the pair of revamped 15’s with CD to cover hard right. Soundcraft masters at unity, channel strip at about -5dB. No subs (I did consider it, there were 2 National anthems)

At 6am precisely, hit play.
Everyone, and I mean everyone, in town heard the service (or got woken up by it) clear as a bell. Even the house at 800 m.
Those around 400m away all told me it was like I had set up at their front gate, loud and clear, and just amazing. Haunting, emotional, atmospheric were all terms tossed out there.
In the weeks following many have made the effort to personally thank me, and think it should be like that every year. Maybe that will be how our community goes from now on.

These cabs simply perform amazingly. There is no other way to describe them.
Thanks to Bill for an outstanding high performing design.
Thanks also to all those who have contributed to my journey here in the forum...

Nice review Grant. Must've been loud up close.

It crossed my mind about having a single column of four. I appreciate line sources are frequency dependent, however I see a line projecting in my mind's eye, as opposed to a 'point', and it still makes some sense.
2xJ12L (3012HO) switchable/melded
2xT30

Words&graphics - Audio&Acoustics - Hardware&DSP; 3 different paradigms.

Quite loud
I was quite struck by the difference of going from 1 pair to 2, and that and running them harder without distortion really upped the ante.

4 in a stack. Mmmm, may have to one day just to see...

ANZAC Day - Re: DR250’s x 4, 25th April 2020.

Amen to that Brother.
Sound must have been amazing.
That's a great service you've done for your community & yourself.

In NZ we had a similar government response - no outdoor public services etc. but each family stand at your gate.
My wife and I stood out at the end of our road in the darkest morning light, candles in hand with a neighbours radio turned up listening to the broadcast.
Many families came on the road for about 30 minutes or so - it was respectful & sombre & absolutely quiet.

The Last Post then Reveille calling out in the dark was very emotional for everyone.

I had the thought at that time to maybe set up a PA on a hill nearby for next year as the sound would tumble down the valley plus wake up all those who didn't set alarms!

Thanks Grant.

For those whom are interested I've included a link giving the history behind ANZAC Day.

Cheers.
Emotional, yes.

It went so well, and this thread is about the cabs, not me :)
