Simplexx 10 as a studio monitor?

#1 Post by la80vette »

I'm considering this build as a nearfield or midfield studio monitor.
It reminds me of the Tannoy HPD or newer Eaton series. I like the coaxial.
Is there way to bring down the bump in the 3k to 5k region?

The Beta 10 CX is used a lot in studio monitors and HT speakers. Where I'd go different than the stock S10 is with the HF driver. The ASD 1001 is fine for pro-sound, which doesn't do much above 10kHz, and the emphasis of the ASD in the 3-5kHz region is good for intelligibility in PA use, but that's not required for studio or home use. For a monitor I'd go with something that goes to at least 15kHz, like a Selenium D220Ti. It also runs flatter than the ASD1001.

Would that driver screw into the 10cx the same and would the cover need any modifications?

It's a standard 1 3/8" thread, and the same crossover is fine.

I'd be very interested to hear about how this turns out.
I've been wanting some mid-sized coaxial monitors for my studio for a while. I always wanted some of those older Urei's with that Blue high frequency horn sticking out from the woofer... Should have bought some back when studios were throwing them out.

This may be a stretch, but are there any options for the high-frequency driver that aren't made of titanium or other metals?
I've noticed over the years that during long-term listening sessions in a studio environment that the titanium and aluminum tweeters fatigue my ears much quicker than softer/silk options... (even with the very expensive boutique studio monitors such as Genelec.)

Are there other BFM designs that would be well suited for mid-sized studio monitoring? I have the traditional nearfield 6.5" & 8" 2-way arena pretty well covered with NS-10's and some older Paradigms, but am certainly curious about what works well from Bill - especially for a mid-field.

The material the diaphragm is made of has no bearing on the sound, it's how it's made that counts. Soft domes don't work well in horns due to the high throat pressure. What's fatiguing is high level distortion. Since horns have much lower distortion than direct radiators they're inherently less fatiguing.

Makes sense Bill. Thanks.
I may build up a set of these (I might lean toward the 12" since I've already had great success with the other 12" Simplexx offerings for Key and Bass rigs) once my other projects have been knocked out.

OP, please let us know how it works out if you decide to move forward with it.
Curious - what amp will you drive it with (assuming the amp is in the same room)?

tvent,
I'm going to try and start the build next week. This will be my first attempt. Leland Crooks has done all of my speakers.
I'll certainly post updates and a review.
I was hoping to get a used Bryston amp, maybe a B3 or B4. It's not pressing right now and I have power amps that i can run with.

Thanks for the update Stephen. I'm looking forward to see how things progress.

Leland is a great builder. He built a pair of my T39s directly and I think I also bought a pair 2nd hand that he may have built. Class act.
You'll do fine building your own. As is always said here: Take your time/don't rush and read the plans thoroughly.
I really like the Simplexx line for the purposes I've built them for so far.

Are you going sealed or ported for the monitors?

Bryston? Good choice. I always convince myself they are out of my budget, but I may bite that bullet some day.

I was looking at building a pair of these DIY Class A amps for my NS10's:

I might be money ahead to pony up for a 2nd hand Bryston though, now that you mention it.

I won’t be doing any modifications other than the Hf driver. If the cabinet comes out square and clean, I may attempt to veneer it.

Question about the S10 cabinet, if the volume and ports are maintained per plans, can the baffle panel be smaller than in the plans? Thx.

I'm guessing you don't like the offset driver and want a more symmetrical baffle. Bill did that for a reason. If it's just to make a smaller cab, that's something I can't answer in a scientific way. That being said, my S110 in my car is more than adequate for my needs (or most people's).
