Hi from Melbourne Australia

#1 Post by termite »

Hi all

I've been lurking for a while and have a small BFM based pa.
Is there anyone else from Melbourne here?
I'm really interested to hear other BFM systems.

Regards
Gerard

G'day and welcome to the forum :)

What have you got?
I think there is another member from Melbourne, but haven't seen them in ages...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Hi Grant
Thanks for the welcome.
My system is very modest - two SLA pros and two tuba 30 slims, bp102 loaded.
I wish I'd used 3012lfs........I get plenty of bass but at loud gigs I'll be on the limiters a lot.
Regards
Gerard

Hi Gerard, good to see another fellow Aussie into the bfm world! If you're ever in Perth I'd be happy to demo my system, OT12's and T30's 3012 loaded. There's also another fellow over here with T39's / DR250's, and another with a big herd (12) of T48's, he does regular bush doofs with that system. I still haven't experienced it yet but intend to. What kind of music are you into? Do you DJ or produce?

Dan

Hi Dan
I'm into all sorts of music.
My system has been used for a couple of loud funk bands, an Elvis impersonator with backing tracks, stand up comedians and my own duo (me on keyboards and female vocals).
I'd like to get into DJing but I don't know where to start. I like trance.
I want to hear (feel!!!!) the 12 T48s! I'd like very much to hear your system but I don't get to Perth very often. I was there a couple of years ago for the Australian National band championships - I play the tuba and sometimes percussion in a brass band.

Good stuff. Most of the time my system lives spread across two houses (my brother and I built it together) in home theatres and in mixing dens. Occasionally we get to use all 6 T30s but not as often as we'd like. We've found the T30s go just low enough for the electronic music we like, a few extra hz would be better!

Regarding your T30s, one upgrade path would be to swap out the BP102s for 3010LFs. You'd get a bit more volume out of them, but also if you built another pair 3012LF loaded, you'd be able to limit all at 50V, as opposed to 2 at 50V and 2 at 35V.

All good!
Did you source your drivers locally, or ???

So is the T30 slims choice based on pack space?.
If yes, you could upgrade as Dan has suggested, though I'd hold off for a while.
Presently, changing to the 3010lf is slightly problematic in it's shape, and has been presently discontinued, but somewhere here on the forum it will be re released with a round basket, and that may be a direct drop in replacement.

What are you using for DSP, what's your sub HP and LP, tell us your chain.

I use BP102's in my 20" wide T39's, and I never seem to get near the limiter...

Hi Grant
I bought everything from Parts Express.
I briefly researched local suppliers, but there was no cost saving and I could get everything in one order from PE.

I use an XR18 into a driverack PA2 into a QSC GX3 for the SLAs and a GX5 for the subs (both on one channel).
Subs are high passed at 35 Hz and cross over is 100 Hz.
I started off with one sub for my duo which is not very loud and I wanted it to be as inconspicuous as possible.
I may have been conservative when setting the limiter.
When hitting the limiter you could feel the subs through the floor thirty feet away. (No wall loading).
I had people telling me to turn it up!
For a lot of jobs the two tubas are overkill. They always seem to take up a lot of room in the room, I couldn't imagine wrestling with larger boxes.

Gerard

I've been thinking about swapping the BP202s for 3012lf's but it would be an interesting woodworking exercise.

It's doable, you'd have to make a new baffle and either cut the old baffle out somehow then glue the new one in place, or glue the new baffle down on top of the old. Not sure how that would change critical elements like area inside the chamber though, might not be enough to matter?

I was thinking of enlarging the hole in the existing baffle if there was enough room to get a laminate trimmer in there using a top guided bit with a template.
The biggest problem is I used driver screw retention blocks and screwed them in.
The screws may be entirely on the waste inside the cut line. I'll have to measure and see.

The hardest part with that idea will be ensuring the new driver is perfectly aligned to the newly cut hole and the cone is not fouling with the edge.. also drilling the new pilots dead straight could be tricky as well. It might take a few goes of installing the driver, testing for slap and removing the driver to sand/adjust. Give it a crack definitely if you think you can do it, start a build modification thread! At worst you'll ruin the current baffles and then opt for a new baffle.

I'm still looking for any other BFM owners in Melbourne.
Does anyone know what's happened to basshund?

Gerard,
The only thing I can think of to try is send basshund a PM through here.
If he has set up his account to e-mail him notification of a PM, he may get it, and respond...
