t 39 build

#1 Post by mikeocean »

Well I got the plans and ready to attack this project... Excited and nervous all at the same time. Have always wanted to build speaker cabinets and its time to do this..
I do have one question... Looking at the plans it shows the side to be approx. 40 inches high each... It also shows the side width (deep) approx. 20 inches.. . If I make the side 24 (deep) and the front width 24 will that affect anything for the output / sound.... advantages or disadvantages on making the cabinet bigger then the plans call for, or should I build them according to the plans and just make the front ( looking straight on at the finished product) 24" in width...

So the finished cabinet would be 40 high x 24 deep x 24 wide or if I follow the directions for 1 12" driver it is approx. 40 high x 19" deep and 24" wide... I know I'm asking what some may consider dumb questions but trying to buy materials and I need these in 2 weeks for an event I don't have time for mistakes.
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

The most important thing everyone will tell you is to follow the directions.

Adding another 4 inches will significantly alter the cab in unexpected ways. If you need a 24 X 24 footprint, build a T48. Can it be 24 x 24 x 48?.

Read a little further in the plans.....that's the rough cut dimensions.....the exact dimensions come later.

I don't need the extra space was simply asking that if I built it bigger will there be any gain in frequency response, spl, etc... SO basically the only variable to play with on this build is to widen the front of the unit (I'm going to build mine 24 inches).. Keep the depth and height the same... I'm also going to use the 3012lf speaker recommended in the plan sheets..

Yes, only modify the width. More with will not give you deeper frequency response (the limit stays at 45hz) but it will give you more volume.

Groups of 4 or more T39's will have response to 40hz. This is described in the plans under discussion of limiting, I think towards the end?
2xJ15, THT, 4xT39 3012 (2x15", 2x20"), 2xSLA Pro, 2x short SLA Pro (Dayton), W6

+1.

It's under "protecting your driver".

And if it's not specifically mentioned in that section, the limiter means a brick wall limiter as found in rack units (eg DCX2496 or the DBX driverack series) or amps with onboard DSP.

Hmm.
You need drivers on hand to build the baffles, the DSP as mentioned above, and you haven't got everything together yet.
It will, or may not, serve you well to rush the build. IIRC, it took me 3 (8 hour) days per cab to get the final side on for my first pair. There was still bondo, sanding and paint to do for both cabs, which took another couple of days.
So if you have work and so on, you will struggle.

Perhaps it might be a better idea to not rush the build and dry hire some subs for this event, and have your own gear ready to roll after that...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

The drivers will be here tomorrow. The wood will be here Friday and Saturday and Sunday are working days on this project. I already have the processors and amps for this project. Going to break in the drivers this weekend also. I think with the week ahead I'll have these ready for the event. If they don't have the protective corners and little stuff like that for the event I'm ok with small details being left out. Just need them to be functional but constructed correctly. Thanks to all who gave me helpful input... I'll try and take some pictures of it all and post if I remember to take the pictures...
