Hi From Perth, Western Australia

#1 Post by SimonD »

HI Folks
I am looking to build a PA for our band "The Bight" we are a five piece straight up Rock & Roll band playing Aussie covers from 80s to present. we play private corporate gigs and small pub gigs from 50 to 250 people. Our only concern is weight, we are all done with lugging big heavy boxes :-). What would you guys recommend I build? Complexity and engineering is not an issue I have a large workshop with every concievable tool etc. I currently run a Fractal Axe guitar rig with two QSC KW22s and have to keep lending one to the band as a FOH box. I was thinking a couple of subs, some top boxes and six wedges. I have had a look at all the designs and read a lot of posts but there are too many choices :-). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Regards Simon
Built
2 x DR250 (Kappalite 3010MB, ASD1001S)
2 X T39 24" (Kappalite 3012LF)

T39 subs with premium speakers and either OT12s or DR250s.

Monitors will depend on what you want to run through 'em.

6 - T39 3012LF
4 - OT12 2512
1 - T24
1 - SLA Pro
2 - XF210

Welcome to the forum!

+1 for Bruce's comments.

Are you using the KW22s for FOH or for guitar cabs?

Thanks Guys, I was going down the track of T39s & DR250s, good to have confirmation.
My QSC KW22s are supposed to be my guitar boxes only, but because we have no PA at the moment we have been using just one for guitar and one of them for FOH. They are great boxes and at 1000W do an ok job. I really want to use both of them for guitar as intended as all my patches are set up in stereo etc.

For wedges I'll probably go for six Wedgehorn 8s

G'day and welcome to the forum :)

More Aussies, yay

I have built and use (for live sound) all you bought plans for except the WH10, so another +1!

Think WH10 for drumfill, and keys.

Read your plans, then read them again, and again, etc until you know them by rote before building!
If you have any queries, or don't quite understand, ask any questions before you proceed, there is usually somone around to get an immediate answer.

These designs take less power for the same output as direct radiators, and weigh less.

And it's not mentioned anywhere per se, you need DSP processing to protect drivers.
Just letting you know up front.

Oh, and we love build threads.

Everything is expensive here compared to US pricing.
Have a look at this thread for suppliers:

If you want to PM (private message) me, feel free...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Is there still a Fane and Precision Devices dealer over there? Might be worth looking in to for alternate drivers

Hi Folks
Thanks for the tip Grant, Hi AussieDoof.
I ordered the plywood yesterday so I am now officially committed to the project :-)
Has anyone used the P-Audio speakers before?
http://www.cannonsound.com.au/shop/bran ... ss-woofer/

No datasheet provided so not a good sign ;-(

I have had a good look at the DR250 sketchup drawing and think I have it under control. I am pretty familiar with Sketchup so that makes it easier. I have gone through the entire drawing and put all the components on individual layers so that I can hide any section of the drawing and only display what I need to see (not sure why the original is not layered ?, maybe Bill just put it all on one layer after drawing it for simplicity)
Looking forward to getting started.

Simon,
The PAudio drivers were also floated by me when I first got here.

Bill said not to use them, quality control is an issue at times. Different model number on driver compared to box etc etc.

I built my pair of DR250's with Beta10a drivers, which are obtainable here at reasonable prices. While that choice costs one around 5db in the mids, the premium driver 2510 is exhorbitantly priced here (RRP $330 as per distributors current pricing) , and shipping it in is still expensive enough...

I reckon we need to start a "Perth Members" thread hey fellow Perthians?
