Started the T39's with a cabinet maker

Unfortunately the build has stalled as my friend has focused on finishing his 69 Camaro. It's ice cream season and he's had this car for a decade, this is the year. Though I have mentioned that if he would just finish the assembly I would do the rest. As there is little left to go.

Well, if your buddy didn't insist on inflating a one-week project into a two month grind with all that fancy jointery, you'd already be rocking out by now.

There was only 10 days of build to the last pics.

I personaly wouldn't have been impressed that his 10 year project suddenly became top priority though, when he is part of the band.

I realize I'm sounding facetious Grant, but Dan still doesn't have any subbage, as of yet. According to Babylonian Law the contractor shall make good with the client with at least a few beers, cool car or not.

Actually what you see in those pictures was done in what amounts to 2 weekends time. He is very good at this stuff. Personally I think he was intrigued to see what they were like. Once they were virtually together his curiosity was satisfied and there they sit. But we have talked and I know he wants to get the Camaro done and out of his shop and get his wood shop back.

Well he has been pushing on the car for a year. It was completely stripped to the raw body and sat that way for years. This is a total restoration. He even built a rotating stand that the body was mounted to so that the bad panels could be easily replaced and everything painted. I can snap some pictures if interested.

So, when I started this, I was willing to wait to do the speakers after the car was done. I have figured we would not have started this until late May or June. I have some time, but frankly I own 2 small ( I mean small, one is 1/2 of what it was pre crash) businesses and between the both it's 7 days per week for my sweetie and I. Plus, elderly parents that I stay at their house 4 nights per week. So, I'm not complaining that the speaker build has taken a pause.

I promise, I have not forgotten this thread.

Some of the best build results have been obtained by guys with little to no experience building cabs.

That would be me,little to no experience but i was able to get DR's done,even after having to start over because i didnt find the proper bending axis for my horn sheaths which bowed and pulled away.After i started doing BF builds,a buddy of mine ordered some plans to build a bar and i enlisted the help of a carpenter to help me build it.Of course the carpenter looked at the plans then set them aside and said he didnt need the plans,i put the plans right back in front of him and said lets stick to this.I think they get offended at the thought of someone telling them to follow a plan for what they "think" they already know.On another note,i think it was foul for him to build up to that point then stop.It would be easier to finish the cabs b4 the wood warps,then dedicate as much time as needed to his car but then again i have a compulsion,if i start something i'm going to keep at it until i finish it or die.

I think when it comes to professionals, doing it their way is always the preferred option as that is where they perceive themselves as most efficient.

Following the plans of someone else can take longer and introduces unknowns. If you are working on the clock, I can appreciate how some pros would want to do it their own way.

True, but being a professional carpenter/cabinet maker does not make one a professional speaker builder. One must be able to admit when they're out of their depth. That's why general practitioners don't do open heart surgery.

Tim has decided we need to get the speakers done. He figures the Camaro will be taking longer (code for missing a good part of the ice cream season) and we need the speakers. So I'll post some more soon I hope.

I was gonna question the previous "I'll wait until the car is done before getting the subs done" when we alllllllllllllll know that restorations take forever.

Hopefully these'll be done soon so he can take a run at the car properly but I bet you'll be bothering him to build you another pair soon enough...

Yes, I would love to build a second set. I would do as others suggest. 2 more OT12's with the flat array and 2 T39's at 22 to 24". Have to replenish the funds though.

You should strongly consider the flat packs Leland offers over on www.speakerhardware.com

While you will spend a little more money, you can assemble them instead of waiting for someone else.

Yes, I know of his flat packs. I have thought about them. However, I am capable of cutting the wood myself. I've had a table saw since 1988, one of the original Delta Contractor saws, along with a radial arm saw (24" capacity). I can borrow my brother's router if needed. I could even dado and rabbet it all (I have the blade set), but as everyone has noted, way more time and effort than needed, but I have done such work before.

I might purchase the wood and build the cabs over the winter and get the speakers when I can. Just too many other needs to get done currently. I know it's not officially summer, but I'm already thinking about what I will be doing by August to my Jeep (clutch, re-gasket engine, timing chain, tires, some suspension stuff) so that it's good to go for plowing another few years. This, right after I finish removing a greenhouse and replacing a sink/cabinet in the flower shop and installing a small hot water tank (5 gal) to get it off the house's boiler.
