Nope. Just another mystery of the DRs! Actually, you have to disassemble the driver and re-build it in the cab once the cab is completed, working through the port ducts. Just like a ship in a bottle. I don't think I can give away too many secrets, though, unless you know the secret DR club handshake.miked wrote:Excuse my ignorance as I've never built DRs before. Why are you afraid to seal up the back? These have a removeable access panel that you insert/bolt down the driver thru, right?

In this pic, what are the 5 little "nubs" per side, on the center column in the mouth? Are they grill braces? It's looking awesome, BTW! You should be proud.

Re: DR250 Time Lapse Photos
They are called "nacelles". Screws go through them to fasten the module to the horn.

Re: DR250 Time Lapse Photos
Thanks, Tom. "Nacelle" is fancy talk for "cleat" I guess.
I just stared at the pic for about a minute going "WTH ARE those things?" Now I know. "Module?" As in melded tweet array?

Re: DR250 Time Lapse Photos
Mike,
The older version had the horn sheath coming right to the front, and the array (melded or flat) had to be totally sealed as that sealed the driver chamber.
This version has the array in an attachable module. The module has a backing plate (the exception being CD horns) that seals the chamber instead.
So, the nacelles are there to allow screwing of the module to seal the chamber.
This also lets you insert the driver from the front, instead of via access panel(s) (top and/or bottom).
I, for the life of me, could not wrap my head around those nacelles.
I'm glad to see more than one person has...

Re: DR250 Time Lapse Photos
Excellent explanation, Grant. Now I get it. That whole front piece that the nacelles are on, comes off. Man, that looks difficult to build!

Re: DR250 Time Lapse Photos
It's not exactly like drawing in a coloring book, but there's nothing inherently difficult about making the DR. It just takes patience, a sharp pencil, and reading comprehension skills. There's no reason to be scared about doing them because any mistake can be fixed with a chisel, saw, sandpaper, PL, Bondo, Duratex, a fire pit, or any combination of those.
Here is what the false back should look like when done. This is one of the cabs I bought and refurbished. Fellow forum member Bryce bought them from me. I like the look.

If you didn't tell me I was looking at a speaker build I'd consider myself watching the construction of a flux capacitor space time continuum thingo
Marvelously intricate looking build you've got going on there NCgrove so much allure with the DR series.
I bet firing them up for the first time is going to be a hell of a good time!
Are you building within your home? Awesome

Re: DR250 Time Lapse Photos
Strangely enough, I built my first pair of DR's with a detachable array module but rather than being secured on the outside, it was secured behind the piezo array.

The cabs certainly look better from further away than closer.
All of the cutting and sanding goes on in my workshop here:

The only thing missing is a cold beer in that koozie.
And most assembly goes on in the guitar zone of my living room. It's certainly the cleanest part of the apartment because it gets swept for sawdust and excess PL almost daily.
