Live Sound ~ External Pre Amp

I have a Yamaha MG 166cx mixer for live sound. I would like to use an Aphex 107 pre amp for lead voicals.
I have used this pre with a Heil pr-22 for recording and liked the diference. What is the best way to try this?
My understanding is you can not get around the internal mic pre on the board. I have tried the mic and line in
connection. It sounds ok going into the line in with the trim set low. I probably need a different or better board,
but I thought someone else might have a solution !!!!!

On better boards, the line ins do bypass the preamps. On entry level boards like the Yamaha, they usually just pad down the line input.

The MG boards (and most other entry level boards) sound like crap when the pres break up... and they break up quickly. The Aphex is a studio piece... you really need to think hard about whether you want to take that out or not. They're not really designed for that.

Look at the Presonus 16.0.2 or the Mackie DL1604 (requires ipad). Behringer is also coming out with a couple of smaller versions of the X32 with 16 inputs. Any of those would net your a big increase in sound by virtue of their processing.

The other option is to use an aux input....but, then you won't get any EQ or effects.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts. I was hoping to pick up a used Presonus. The Aphex 107 is an ok pre amp.
It is built so solid it can be used for live sound. I have an effects rack that it's in and it usually rides in the
passenger seat.

If you can step up to the 16.4.2 - do it. More features and 16 mic inputs vs. 12 on the 16.0.2. Plus you get 4 subs vs. none, 6 auxes vs. 4., and 4 band EQ vs. 3 band.

I saw a $300 rebate on 'em.....I think is was Sweetwater, but it might be industry-wide - if you can swing a new one.

I was checking the 16.0.2 out and it has no inserts available ~ dang!!
The 16.4.2 is otta my price range for now. I still may buy the 16.0.2
at $650 from a friend. Hard to pass up at that price.

An insert isn't necessary. Plug the mic into the external preamp, then return to the line in of a channel.
