First post - First cab build (Wedgehorn 6)

#1 Post by Blue »

Hi all. Firstly, thanks for all the help that you have all made readily available through these forums. Your expertise is mind boggling. My monitor finally succumed to the rigors of weekly abuse, a few weekends ago. I ordered the W10 plans and starting construction last Sunday. By noon, I knew these were going to be to big and ordered the W6 plans. I went ahead and finished the W10 cab just as an excercise and to ensure these were actually going to be within my mediocre carpentry skills. The cab takes a full day to complete, even with a few mistakes. It is all in the plans, as is repeatly pointed out in these forums. However. the novice builder can expect to use a tad more ply than advertised, on their first attempt. The empty W10 cab was immediately adopted by a musician friend who is very accomodating when it comes to free stuff.

The W6 cab build was straight forward, thanks to the experience gleamed in building the W10. It did however, still take a full day. I ordered the deluxe kit from Speaker Hardware, which was shipped the same day. Going this route is a bit of a cop out but I figured it would be worth it as at the only crossovers I was familiar with, are used to join two pipes that are of different sizes or threads.

I painted the cabs with a Rhino type bed liner paint. This covered any imperfections, does not chip and is incredibly durable. Do not apply this with the inspection cover on, unless you are extremely confident in your work, as it will never come off again without a jig saw :D. While on the topic of the inspection cover, using the sealing tape does raise the cover about an 1/4" ( at least it did mine). I do have a planer so will run it through that to get it flush again. I am not sure how well ply planes but if needs be I will use a piece of solid wood here.

I plugged the W6 into a Peavey 8600D powered mixer, which still had the previous monitor EQ settings on it. As I bought up the volume, I was a little startled by the sound. Very high across the full spectrum but easily fixed with the monitor side EQ. Crisp now comes to mind. I did a mike check (although with my voice this was hardly fair to the monitor) and again was impressed with how crisp it sounded. I am sure crisp is hardly a technical term but it sure describes the sound. I then played a regular CD through it and with a little further EQ adjustments, left it playing while I cleaned up my mess. Totally acceptable even in that role. I am extremely pleased with the result and will be looking at additional builds in the near future.

Pssst.. It's not just the first attempt!! And then you have to figure out which bits to keep and which to throw away!

Looking good.

LOL....I kept all the offcuts and bits and pieces knowing that Bill, in his infinite wisdom, must have based one of his designs to be built using scrap lumber, knowing people like us now have a shop full....

After building a few subs and tops you should be able to make some W6s from nothing but scraps.

If you can build tidy wedgehorns, subs will be a doddle.

Edit, odd that a "real picnic" is a misadventure.

Well done!
I don't know how you did the build in a day...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Thanks, it was a full day! I actually cut the pieces for two boxes while I was at it, as I know I am probably going to need two eventually. Once the saws were set up it cutting the second didn't take but an extra minute or two. As I mentioned in my original post....I kinda cheated and had all the electronics prebuilt at Speaker hardware so it was a simple plug and play type install.

That would certainly help!

I was more wondering how you assembled the horn and the box and allowed the PL to set/cure before trimming etc, in a day?
Mine took me 2 days (due to letting the PL set)...
